[WoW] Why am I Lagging? (FPS)

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just got this new system. Runs wonderfully, but being the OCD perfectionist I am I can't help but notice that my FPS drops from 150 to 50 (NOT 60!) when in Orgrimmar. What's confusing the hell out of me is "Why?"

I'm running i5-2500K @ 4.5GHz
GTX 580 @ 900/1800/2100
8GB RipjawsX 1600MHz@8-8-8-24-1T

I'm checking my performance while I'm in game; my cpu is running at 25%, 10%, 50%, 70% for each core, and my GPU is at a measly 35% (VRAM is only at 550mb). Why exactly am I lagging?

Well, you mentioned that your GPU utilization is only at 35%, and that's definitely weird because it shouldn't be bottlenecked. Are you checking those statistics in-game with an OSD or are you tabbing out?

Is your GPU utilization that low in any other game? It also really depends how many people are in Orgrimmar, too.

Are your addons up to date?

From your post I want to assume core parking is off but I suppose it's worth a shot:

Aside from WoW always having terrible performance issues core parking is usually the culprit for Win7. Of course I don't even run Win7 and my FPS in WoW when I used to play was always quite awful with my current rig. Sorry if I couldn't be of more help . Good luck!

Also a possibility as well. Whenever there's a new patch, addons will cause tons of errors and really limit your performance.

Look at my sig rig and I play WOW. My rig gets 73+FPS. The only 3 things can hold you back.
1) CPU speed.
2) Internet speed.
3) Add-ons are not up to date

EDIT
The more add-ons you have the more it can lag on you.

I found this to be especially true with mods that use large databases such as auction mods, and DPS meters. Whenever I would forget to clear the meters for a long time, I would lag like crazy.

Post a speedtest

I'm running the game in windowed mode to check performance, however there's little to no change in FPS compared to fullscreen.

I forgot to mention that I'm NOT running ANY addons. Completely fresh install of WoW.

I'm a little confused as for what "Core parking" is. I'm going to google it.

Here's my speed test.

EDIT: I also just want to point out that my lag ONLY occurs in Orgrimmar. I literally get 100+ FPS everywhere else in the game, however after entering any highly populated city I see a drastic performance decrease. Will latency or poor internet translate to fps drops in this situation? I'm still very confused as for where I'm getting bottlenecked.

EDIT 2: This is the speedtest using a CA server (where my realm is situated).

TRIPLE EDIT: Okay I read that thread you linked, and was thoroughly surprised by the OPs results. Trying the regedit right now I'll return momentarily with results.

Nope, the core parking regedit had no effect on performance. I'm still getting the same FPS in game. Any ideas? I'm thinking I might try OCing my CPU a little bit more, but that will have to wait till tomorrow.

Do you have shadows turned all the way up? If you're in a high player populated area with shadows at max that could be a negative factor as well. Granted they could have fixed the shadow issues as I quit (again) right before Cata.
