Considering new set of head phones and soundcard - Page 2

I have both the Asus Essence ST and Sennheiser HD595s and I can honestly tell you it was my favorite upgrade of the last two years. It will make you hate your 128kbs MP3s but once you hear FLAC on a halfway decent setup, you will realize why.

FYI both the ALC889 and the STX were connected to a dedicated $400 Headphone AMP. So impedance did not play any factor here.

Also even directly connected without any amp on the Titanium HD and Realtek, my Audio Technica ATH-A900 show a clear difference and those are very low impedance Headphones.

It's almost appalling to hear you give out that advice when I am pretty certain that your case is not the norm.
I think your case is not the norm, or does everyone own $400 headphones?

Fair point. However I just used my HD650 to illustrate a point. I own 4 sets of Headphones all ranging from $120-$450. I can tell the difference will all of them. Granted more so with the higher price phones.
The OP was looking to get HD 595 which are $150 phones. So by no means are they crap. Even if that were the case Onboard Audio blows chunks. Want dull, boring, recessed and smudged Sound with narrow Soundstage, if so then 889 is your ticket. Hell the $30 Asus DG is better than any realtek garbage.

Realtek is terrible.

Get a asus xonar DG/DX, some M50s, or some HD595s.

thats a good entry budget. you should get a hd650 or an akg 701. and a good dac amp. I would get them used from head-fi, that way if you find that it doesn't fit you, you can resell them at a very minimal loss.

here is a link for a 701
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...rade-for-hd650

there is a bunch of good dac/amp combos out there
musiland monitor comes to mind

I went and read some reviews of the HD650s and a lot of people were saying that they aren't very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time?

I'd prefer something that I could wear for several hours at a time and be comfortable wearing for that much time if at all possible.

Don't skimp on the source. I say get the Asus Xonar Essence STX @ Superbiiz. Use the promo code rapture15 and get $15 off, for a total of: $158 shipped.

As for headphones these are some good choices:

Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO - $166 @ B&H

Sennheiser HD598 - $188.95 @ eBay Authorize Dealer (Full Warranty)

If you can spend a little more:

Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro - $214.95 @ eBay Authorize Dealer

From here on up for more expensive options I would recommend the Denon AH-D2000 or Sennheiser HD600
