[IG] Sony Won't Make Massive Investment in PS4

Sony this week confirmed the obvious: PlayStation 4 is coming, and indeed work has already started on the new hardware. However, this time around, the company has vowed not to make the same mistake twice; Sony claims it will not invest as heavily in a PS4 the way it did with the PS3.

I don't blame them. They spent a ton developing the PS3 and for the first year after its release or so they were not even making a profit off of the PS3.

There's really no reason to invest in R&D for game consoles. Consoles are just computers now. They could probably just pay AMD and license the Fusion APU for the PS4. The E-350 + Radeon 6310 is powerful enough to do a bit of light PC gaming, I'm sure it could be amazing with all of the optimizations that comes with being a console.

So why make a new one? Especially since they had a massive breach, and it's still going on. That doesn't want me to get one anymore then I do.

I will interpret this as them choosing more conventional hardware. In hindsight, Cell was probably not worth it to Sony.

not probably, definitely. it caused more problems than anything. nobody wanted to program for it. it made all cross platform games the crappier version on PS3.

the saddest part was they were going to try to build off it w/ a faster higher core cell for ps4 but the cell was abandoned by IBM.

they should just do what MS did for the original XBOX, use PC hardware. it will have better games out of the gate and end up cheaper in the long run.
