Hardware like that put into a console sized case would run way too hot.

Well, with the GTX570 chip shrunk to 28nm or even to 22nm, the chip would use far less power than it does now.

Sony already knows how to properly build a console with a 180w power consumption (the PS3's original power consumption). And I bet they are going to go a bit higher than that now. GPU's are getting more hungry, and until some revolutionary manufactueing process comes along (or they can use something similar to Intel's 3D transistors), I think they must go a little higher for now. Then they can shirnk the chips as tech advances like they did with the PS3, which now only uses 60w. I think they will probably go for something like 200w total for now. It's doable, the original PS3 did 180w, and didn't have any problems, unlike the original Xbox.

I guess I picked a good time to invest in my sig rig then...both consoles are pretty much massively outdated and there's nothing on the horizon for atleast 2 more years. Even a console in 2015/16 most probably won't have the computational power equivalent to a 2500k+580 (both overclocked).

Sooo the best thing to do is look deeper into emulators to get some of those fun console games running on my PC! I would KILL to be able to play stuff like Bayonetta....

comparing your rig to a console isnt correct line of thinking as they use two different technologies

Sony should join forces with AMD and make a console. if they developed it together im sure that it would blow the new xbox out of the water.

That being said im 100% certain i can build a rig with more performance in the same size box for $700. so sorry guys but consoles are dead.
