Anything above 2gig is waste. Tell me a use which will require that much?

They wont ever support any outside os.

People expecting GTX 580 and GTX 570's need to stop. If Sony were to sell the Console at cost, they would be losing alot of money, as you need to take other things into consideration like Marketing/Advertising/R&D.

2: 2gB sounds good, but if you see alot of tests. At HD res 1gB is good enough too and that is on PC's doing 4xAA and what not. So pretty sure it will be a 1gB ddr3 for ps4 or 1.5gB. 2gig is seriously needed if going above 1920x1080.

Edit: I take my words back. I think things will fall down till 550Ti. GTX460 is out of land.

Something like an i3 with HT would do nicely, and since HDD's still have SSD's on $/Gb, some 7,200rpm drives (perhaps air cooled this time Sony?) With an underclocked low-mid range GPU, 35w i3 and low-voltage RAM would make a pretty nice sub-100w console.

In short:
Llano APU
Projected performance (not using the hardware): 460/6850, 2400, 2-4 GB ram
normal 2.5 drives, none of that xbox hard drive crap
blu ray
blue tooth
wifi
KB+M support
no more uber expensive HDD's, stock should be 200 GB AT LEAST.
OtherOS support (for the linux guys and anon not to get mad

Guys... I know it's Saturday.. but did you guys get some sleep ?

How many months do you think a console with those specs, especially the GPU, will last once launched ? You are all forgetting the console, once released, must last at least 5 years. Where will a GTX460 or HD6850 or a GTX550 or HD5770 be by then ? And a dual core i3 ? Really ? Games are now using 4 cores already and you guys want to go back ?

With so many people complaining the consoles are holding back the PC, you guys seem to be on the wrong forum. Sony miscalculated the amount of RAM and the amount of VRAM they put on the PS3. And now you guys are being unbelievably conservative with the PS4, using components from last year into a console being released at least a year from now, if not two. You guys must project how a competing desktop PC will be like in 5 years! You have to future proof a console as much as you can.

But then again you guys also got me wrong in another respect:

As to the GTX570, you guys are not thinking properly. Did you read the part where I wrote - die shrink to 28nm ? You know what that means to power consumption. And that is assuming the console will come out next year. If it comes out the year after that, it will probably be 22nm or something.

The thing is, I'm not doing rocket science here. Next year the GTX570 equivalent will be a midrange card, sold at midrange price, and with GTX460/HD6850 TDP. And if it's released only in 2013, you guys will be saying "meh" when looking at the specs.

Do you remember the TDP for the GTX280 ? Move up in the manufacturing technology.... arrive at 40nm. Remember the GTX460 ? Was more powerful than the previous top of the line, cost way less, and used way less power.

And don't forget GPU's and CPU's will be transitioned to better manufacturing processes as they are developed, as happened with the PS3.

1GB of VRAM is not enough either. If they want to future proof it for new games, and remember what the new Unreal engine can do, it will probably use more than 1GB. Perhaps 1.5 is enough, perhaps 2. I just stated 2.5 Gb because it will be cheap when the console arrives; 2. Nvidia's current memory bus is either 1,25 or 2.5. 2GB would be more appropriate, and will probably be possible with a 256-bit bus. There will also be a need for the new consoles to use AA and AF properly, unlike the current ones, which barely have VRAM for any of that.

Conclusion: you guys are being way conservative, and didn't give much thought to better manucfaturing processes next year, and the year after, which brings costs and TDP down. You also didn't think of a GTX570 equivalent next year being just mid-range, and the need for future proofing a console for a 5 year timeframe.

The more memory the more better. That way it can run full dynamic map instead of area.

Well obviously they talk about conservative specs so they can keep crying about how "consoles are holding back our precious PC gaming"

consoles look terrible. but the ability to sit on a sofa and play with friends is good. but the graphics make my eyes cry...

Console graphics look just fine, considering that they are usually used on TVs rather than on computer monitors. That said, the console makers really need to upgrade their graphics systems because they are very much obsolete systems that are what, five or six generations old. Not that they need to be top of the heap, but at least they should have 1GB of real video memory, and a GPU that is in current (not legacy) production.

Any PS4 should come out with more stable specs than the PS3 ever had. Like the PS2, it was stable - sure, they had the slim version, but they were pretty much the same, hardware wise. The PS3 was far too diverse, like you could get some cool feature but a crummy tiny hard drive - or have the feature chopped and instead, have a slightly larger hard drive. I never bothered with a PS3 just because they chopped the features I wanted a long time ago, and never made those features even an option.

I hope any PS4 has OtherOS, otherwise I'll just go to an XBox 720 when it comes out...

Because if they (SONY/Microsoft) don't we (The PC Gamer) will be stuck on DX9/10 for another 4-5 years.

You don't want that do you?
