Recommend me a PSU

Thread Starter
I need to get a power supply for a computer with...

Core 2 Duo e6600
4GB RAM
1 Hard Drive
1 CD Drive
1x ati radeon 4670hd

Im looking at purchasing through newegg. I wouldnt like to spend more than 100, and would ideally like it in the 60 - 70 range. Something that could support a better graphics card for future upgrades would be nice.

Antec EarthWatts 500W PSU would be overkill for that setup. You don't need anything more than that.

If you're planning on doing some heavy upgrading (SLI or Crossfire in your future), you might want to grab the TX650. Great PSU, but you will probably only use half of the power it outputs with that rig. There's absolutely no reason you'd need more than that with virtually any mid-high range setup.

Uh, you could just about run your computer off one of those ~150W units included with something like a mini-ITX case.

Please don't get the Corsair TX650 (V2 is good; old version is outdated and not a good value). For your target of $65-70, the best thing to get would be the Antec Earthwatts Green 650W, if you've really got heavy upgrades in mind like at least SLI GTX 560 Ti:

If you've only got something like an i5-2500k with a HD 6870 in mind (overclocked is okay), and nothing in the future more powerful than that, I'd just get a Corsair CX430 V2 for $45 ($35 after MIR):

A decent power supply is important, but saving money on other upgrades that actually have a performance impact would be nice.

This setup is actually an old dell that I upgraded with a radeon hd4670 card. It used to run with around a 305watt power supply but i suspect that that psu isnt sufficient anymore as my machine shuts down completly during games.

You're right in your diagnosis. Here's what I recommend:

Will power that build and it's cheap. I assume you aren't thinking of future upgrades? It's just for this system and nothing else?

Id like to be open to the possibility of using this psu in a new build in the future but it isnt necessary

A good brand 500-700, a 600-700 should still be plenty future proof (unless you end up getting like 3 cards...still prolly fine though lol).
