Terrible GPU utilization GTX 570 SLI

post #1 of 13

Hey all,

Just put together a new build that runs great, except for SLI performance. Although I have moderate knowledge about computers, I'm completely new to SLI.

i7 2600k @ 4.5
Maximus IV extreme mobo
2x GTX 570 sli
ripjaw x @ 1866
ax 1200 psu
1920x1080

I get the same FPS using 1 or 2(sli) GPUs. I noticed that when I have 1 GPU activated that my GPU usage is up to where it should be, 90%+. When in SLI it seems like the GPU utilization is what it would be with 1 GPU, just cut in half and distributed with the two.

For example, in COD: Black Ops i get 91 FPS when SLI is activated and also 91 FPS with 1 card activated. With 1 card the GPU usage is about 94%, but with SLI it is 42% on one and 42% on the other. This happens with EVERY game I've tried. Mass effect 2, TES: Oblivion, The Witcher 2, Shogun Total war.

The ONLY application in which this isn't the case is Unigine Heaven benchmark. While running this program, everything looks A-O-K. I get an avg of 108 frames at the end of the benchmark and during the entire benchmark i get 90-100% utilization of both cards.

This doesn't make sense to me. Why would SLI work only in Heaven benchmark? Why is my utilization so low while running sli and why am i getting the same FPS while using SLI and 1 card?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Try running a game that actually needs horsepower to run.. Metro or Crysis should do the trick. Call of Duty can run on a 460 lol .
Also try running a benchmark, Vantage, 3D mark 11, Unigen, etc.

I understand 100% what you mean, i know these games are all dx10.

But you are going to tell me it is normal to have the same FPS with 1 gtx 570 compared to 2 of them in every game i mentioned?

Yes, as i said, unigine heaven works great. I just assumed i'd be getting up and around 120+ frames in the titles i mentioned.

A lot of games have a lock on max FPS. Might need to research into them and see if that is true in your examples.

Yes they could have a lock, but you and i both know that in some of these titles (i.e. COD) benchmarks have been run and people get 120 fps. I see no reason why 2 gtx 570s couldnt do this.

I'm not only using COD as an example either. I think anyone would agree that a dual 570 setup should have more fps in any title than a single 570.

The Witcher 2 requires a good bit of Horsepower. If the graphics aren't tweaked up, try doing that...turning Ubersampling on should utilize all of your GPU if this is just a problem with not having a demanding enough game running.

OP wants double frames for double cards, not balanced between the two. I completely understand that. If I was playing a game at 40fps with one at 90% usage, I would want at least 70 with two cards. Sli is supposed to scale, not balance load. All sli is doing for him is using two cards to help each card not die... if it were by itself. Do NONE of the driver options do anything? Theres sli modes right?

I haven't done sli since 7800gt days when each cards had to match, and I have a 570, and was pondering sli when BD comes, but not if its gonna just balance load... pssht

Interesting thread indeed.

Actually the Witcher 2 has a bunk SLI profile in 275 beta and no actual sli profile in 270.

If you search these forums or head over to the gaming section there is a SLI fix for The Witcher 2 which helped me achieve 99% usage on both gpus. However ubersampling requires more than tri 580s @ 1080 ( 80% usage on all 3 with a i7-2600k at 4.7GHz gets 54fps) to reach 60+ fps, no reason to even try it. Just set some custom forced AA and supersamp through the control panel and call it a day.

SLI is fine.

@Swishamane

I'm not asking for double performance, but gtx 570 scalability was supposed to be great for SLI. I know my case is not everyone's case, so something has to be wrong here.

@ballathefeared

I tried the fix on the most recent driver and beta driver, it makes sli kick in but it does not improve over 1 card- it just makes the light bloom through walls, which i'm sure you heard about. I get about 60 fps in witcher (while sli is on), i'm not complaining but look at what you are getting. I assume you have sli GTX 570s??? You are getting like 40% better performance.

But this isn't about the witcher 2, this is happening to me in every game i have played so far. It is not happening in Unigine, but where does that get me?

I have 470s

Do you have any games with built in benchmarks? If so could you run a few with sli on and sli off? Are you sure you're using the correct x16/ slots for your gpus?

Are you sure your 4.5Ghz clocks are stable, what about ram?

Honestly it almost sounds like you're cpu bottlenecking, but I highly doubt an i7-2600k at 4.5Ghz would do that at such low fps.
