What are the top three 2GB 6950 cards? More questions inside...

1. Topic title

2. Im selling a friend my XFX 6950 2GB for cheap as I plan to get dual cards that are unlockable. What kind of performance increase am I looking at by flashing the bios over to a 6970 and overclocking a bit?

3. How exactly do I go about installing the second card? I have a little bridge piece. What do I do when I boot the system back up?

4. Its going to be a couple weeks before he can get the card. In the meantime I might order 1 of the recommended cards and crossfire what I have now with it until then. Will that cause problems when I switch to a different card?

5. I was told 2x 580's SLI would probably need more than what my power supply can give. I have an Antec TP=750 Modular. Will that suffice for 2 6950s 2GB?

6. Im NOT going to be running anything over 1920x1080p resolution. Two of these cards should max everything easily right?

Hey ya,

Ok if you're going to be doing xfire then I wouldn't unlock them, overclocking is bad enough to get stable tbh.

You can use two diffent makes of card as long as tehy are the same chipset, I.E 6950's.

Two 580's in SLi i'm pretty sure will need somethign a bit more than a TP750. It'll probably run but I'd personally feel safter with something like an 850 - 950.

If your'e not going above that resolution and you're running on a single monitor then a single card will max pretty much anything. I've got no problems with my 570. The only game that I had to not max out was witcher 2 with uber sampling

1: The Sapphire cards, the MSI Twin Frozr II and III cards, and probably the Gigabyte ones are the best ones, in my opinion.

2: 5%-10%...personally i would just stick with OCing as there is a reason that AMD shut off those cores.

3: Put put the second card in then then use the bridge to connect the cards (Plug it in on the little connector in the back of the card) You should re-install the drivers and make sure you download the newest CAP.

4: No Issues as long as they have the same Memory amount (IE try not to crossfire a 2Gb and 1Gb version, it has issues sometimes)

5: It should in theory although i would try to get a Corsair 850w or equivalent (Corsair 850watt is generally comparible to most lower brand 1000watt PSUs)

6: Pretty much, you may not be able to max out AA to 8x or something like that but IMO at 1080p there isnt much need for AA. Its just a personal preference. But Yes it should be able to Max out the majority of things.

1) Reference cards if your interested in unlocking. Other than that some come with factory overclocks and different (and better) coolers. Typically is down to price and warranty, but they perform pretty similar.

2) Best performance is with unlcock or oc. If you don't want to risk your cards, a good oc will be enough. Unlocking may yield minimal increases.

3) Shutoff your rig, insert card in a 8x/16x pcie slot, connect your crossfire bridge. power on the and configure in ccc.

4) as long as its a 6950 your fine, preferably a 2gb but it looks like that is what your going for anyways.

5) Sli 580 will work with a 750w psu but its cutting really close, I would recommend a quality 850w unit for headroom to oc the 580s.

For Crossfire 6950, your 750w is plenty enough.

6) Two 6950s should give you plenty of firepower for games.

So if I don't unlock my cards, I should still be able to handle anything @ 1920 x 1080p at around 50-60 FPS at the least?

I refuse to upgrade my power supply. Hell its a brand new PC.

i5 2500k (stock speed), 4 GB RAM Corsair, Antec TP-750, 2 x 2GB 6950

Just want to make absolutely sure that my system is getting fed properly. I WONT unlock the bios on the cards if that drains more power. TBH, I probably won't OC either.

get your cpu @ 4.0, its plenty capable or more than that btw, to ensure it keeps up with two 6950s. Your psu will be ok with two 6950s, you'll be pulling around 500w.

Jeff, it's not worth the loss of money to try and source 2 ref cards. I'd just get another xfx 2gb card for 240 shipped and call it a day. Hell I might get another and another lol. 3 is the magic number btw....

I was thinking the same thing. Im probably going to be fine with just having two and I don't want to go through all the trouble of flashing bios, unlocking shaders, etc.

Id rather have my card run cool. I might OC them each but not by much.
