Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I am planning to custom build myself an OS using SUSE studio.

I am planning to use Open SUSE 11.4 + KDE 4

What are the basic packages that I should select for KDE 4.

I have planned these, recommendations are welcome

Ktorrent
txt editior for KDE( please recommend)
unRAR
wget or any graphical alternative.
Xchat
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird.
Libreoffice(If required)

Few things to note.

I am planning to distribute to people who need it for very basic purposes(here in OCN & other forums).

My Rig specs are:

Celeron 1.1Ghz socket 370
Intel 810E mobo
2x256MB SD RAM
nVidia 5200 PCI
SATA PCI card(will connect if needed)
Lan Card or Wifi USB adapter
PCI USB 2.0 card.

I'd probably lean more towards something such as XFCE over KDE on such a dated system..

Suse studio is a nice idea but it is such a bloated distro. You would be better starting off with Arch or somethng more minimal. They have tools that can allow you to create a live or installale usb/cd once you know what packages to use.

I tired susestudio before though and I found it kind of difficult to work with for a minimal os.

Arch is a nice option.

But I prefer to keep it simple at the start.

Any recommendations on what packages I should not miss during build.

Have to agree with the above, kde4 is gonna put a serious strain on your machine. If I remember right, there are a few pre-built images there on SuseStudio built around Trinity (kde3.5). Clone one of those after taking it for a test drive and add your packages to it. Cloning other images is a hell of alot easier than making it from scratch anyway.

Maybe go a bit more minimal use openbox with a tint2 panel with chromium, libreoffice, thunderbird, xchat, xarchiver (if you need a graphic file compresser) terminal , xfe for the filemanager and mousepad for the text editor. Thats most of what the average minimal user would need.

I keep refining my Arch install with better and better minimal apps.

Check out SliTaz, it is very lightweight but customisable, and is built around creating a new CD/USB image from the custom install you've done. Small repo though, you might not find everything you need. Puppy is similar, might be worth looking at (not sure you can change the DE that easily though).

My 2 cents: I agree with everyone else, SUSE is a poor choice. If Arch isn't your thing, you should look towards Debian minimal. SUSE's KDE implementation is nice, but it'll have so much crud with it, you're fighting a losing battle before you start
