A few simple questions!

Alright so,

Life story:

Not really but ok. Basically upgraded a pc I got from best buy recently. Installed new 650w psu and a evga gtx 470. Now I knew I was going to bottleneck the hell out of it seeing as im running 2.20ghz and triple core processor AMD. Currently im looking to upgrade it on a budget (explained later). After looking through my pc specs I found this:

Processor upgrade information
Socket type: AM2+
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Phenom with Quad Core (Agena) technology (AM2+) up to 9600 (up to 95 watt TDP)
Athlon64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 5600+ (up to 89 watt TDP)
Athlon64 less than 4000+
Sempron less than 3800+

link to pc specs: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/biz...ctID=c01553736

Questions:

1) Will this processor be compatiable with that motherboard (seems like it to me).

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...scrollFullInfo

2) Will that new cpu fix my bottleneck issues? In games such as battlefield bad company 2 I can use anywhere from 80-90% of my gpu. However when it comes to multiplayer I am stuck at 30% gpu usage and 100% cpu.

THANKS!

P.S: Trying to avoid replacing motherboard, ram, OS, etc...

No that cpu will not work.

Phenom with Quad Core (Agena) technology (AM2+) up to 9600 (up to 95 watt TDP)
means you can only use the 9000 series(up to 9600) amd phenom II x4 (which are am2+ socket).

That is a amd phenom II x4 840 and an AM3 socket. just because the number 840 is less then 9600 doesnt mean it will work lol. In reality the 840 is above 9600.

You "may" be able to do a bios update and it be able to support am3 socket processors, check the manufacturer site.

But in short none of those CPU's listed will do the GTX 470 justice.

The Phenom II 840 is an AM2+/AM3 chip, its not limited to AM3 boards, check your motherboard manufacturer website and check the cpu compatiblity list and find the best cpu you can get from there, you will most likely need a bios update, but surely for you, that beats a board replacment?
