£400 Computer? - Page 2

Other than what everyone's suggested in terms of the Samsung F3 and the PSU, that's a solid new parts build.

Also your OP says the 955's 93 quid, when I saw that I was like "Aha, I've seen that for 83!", but you link to the 83 quid one at Scan.

I had no idea the 5850's had dropped so low, they're like 40 quid less than a 460 1GB, might have to throw that on my Brother's build this summer in place of the 460/560.

To be honest, that i3 540 Setup and forgetting CF and going with the 6950 setup as mentioned above is probably the best performance for the money.

The HCG series are good PSU's, one of those would be a good choice. The CX430 isn't a top unit but for £35 you cant really argue with it. That said if you really want something that you can run most dual card setups on the HCG would be fine, especially at £50!

Nice find. PSU = £50. HDD = £30, GPU = £100, means that the total would be well under budget.

Despite what that review says though, isn't it only a x16/x4 split, so not good for crossfire?

http://www.msi.com/product/mb/H55M-ED55.html#Spec

I asked in the thread if the seller could check for me. Especially as he's offering a GPU as well.
hi, my friend had a h55m-ud2h, he had 2 HD5850's and the bottleneck was no more than 2%

even an x16/x4 (or even x2) is enough for a 5850, you will onlu start seeing performance loss with 2 very high end cards in my experience

edit: saw you took the deal i linked you to - should be a nice build

If I'd be going second hand, we may as well get him a reasonable case, since my older ones don't have the best airflow.

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap case? Ideally I'd like it to be cheaper than the Antec 300, but if we can't find one, I'll understand.

Depends how much you want to spend really, Antec 100 is around £40, 300 is around £45.

Other options are the NZXT Gamma, this or this

The Gamma is a nice case, cheap but pretty well made with good airflow, the Asgard is good too, although you'll want to throw a load of fans in it, only comes with one or two.

That's a surprisingly nice build for <£400.

This! Get the gamma if you can stretch!

I have the m59 essentially the same minus the front panel and it has great airflow. Fits two 140mm fans up top.

If not get one of them casecoms, get alot of features for very little!

Sweet budget build!

edit: Coolmaster storm scout is 55 on novatech nice game for LAN'n

for cases:
i use this: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...ue-fan-w-o-psu
- not the best in cable management but looks good lol

or
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/shark...ble-management ( never tried it but looks good)

Thread Starter

Thanks for all of the cases guys. For budget reasons, I think I'm going to have to go with the Asgard on this one. Several places stock it, and I can pick up one locally for about the same price too.

It turns out that I might have to factor in an operating system after all. He's not sure if the old one is an OEM or a Retail OS... So here comes the cost-cutting...

The current build I'm looking at is:

CPU: i3 540
Cooler: CM Hyper TX3
Motherboard: MSI H55M-ED55
GPU: XFX 5850 1GB
RAM: Mushkin Silverline 1333Mhz DDR3 (£235 Second Hand from Here)
Hard Disk: Samsung F3 1TB (£39.72)
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (£49.99)
Case:

(£28.98)
Operating System: (£89.99)

Total: £443.68
(without cutbacks)

As much as I like cost-cutting, I don't like buying OEM editions of Windows, which means that's the cheapest I've found Windows 7. If anyone can find a cheaper version, that would be brilliant.

I'm now about £45 over budget, so I'm looking to cut costs. I'd rather keep the case, but we can scale back the hard drive to save £10. Is there another PSU people recommend that's actually better than the CX430, for significantly less than £50? I can't seem to find one anywhere in the country.

Also, updating the OP to reflect the changes...

Stick with the PSU you've got in that build, its a great deal.

Could switch to a 500GB HDD and save £10 or so and other than buying an OEM version of Windows, which isn't that much cheaper, I cant see where else you can save money.
