6GB Upgrade from 4GB

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I currently have an ASUS p67 Motherboard with 4GB of Kingston DDR3-1600 RAM.

I can get a miss-matching, yet same voltage, timings, and brand for $10 on craigslist (2GB stick)

If I had 2GB to my motherboard so I have 6GB RAM rather than a full 8GB upgrade, will I lose dual channel?

Also, if I lose dual channel does it matter?

I know I'm a noob

Benchmarks it will show effect. Also if the speed/timings are different/worse than your current RAM it will slow it down. It would look ugly.

Why do you need the extra 2GB?

There was a long article on Tom's a while back about whether having over 4 gig was really worth it, the conclusion was no, unless you're running intricate programs. You should look into faster RAM if you really want you upgrade.

As to your question concerning mismatching RAM, basically don't do it. Especially when size, speed, timings are different.

You won't lose dual channel, as long as two of the sticks are in their matching slots.

Also, define missmatching. If the new one is faster, it'll downclock to the slower ones. If it is slower, it'll make the older ones downclock to it.

If it were me, i'd get the full 8 GB, trying to match all specs. But unless you do video rendering, or you run like 3+ VM's at the same time, 4 GB is more than enough even for games. This coming from someone with 8 GB RAM

You don't lose that much performance but why lose any on purpose. Stick with 4gb or get a matching 4gb set.

Plus, it seems a little fishy that a guy is only selling 1 stick, it was probably a bad one :/. If you buy it make him memtest it on his computer before you buy or something

I'm betting you lose dual channel. I looked at the Manual for that motherboard (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...8P67-M_PRO.zip) and amusingly the ASUS P67's ignore the 3 DIMM situation. They only provide configuration examples for 1,2, or 4 DIMMS.

You have enough at the moment. If you're going to upgrade buy a matching set. I would avoid mismatching ram modules.

Just wait and get the correct/matching ram, dont mismatch and waste your time with this craigslist ram.( just my opinion)

I do *NOT* have enough, I am one of those people who have multiple online jobs and I leave a LOT of applications open while gaming simultaneously, having my RAM usage from 80% to 100% most of the time.
