Currently i have the shaders that i want and Qarls texture pack 3.

Im getting between 15 to 20 fps. HBAO and the deph of field shader im using is mega on the fps. You say 70 to 80% how many frames would i be looking at to what i currently have?
20-30FPS

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

Then you're not going to get good scaling. If you're not turning down anything, 30 FPS is going to be a stretch, and you'll have times where your FPS drops below 15. 70-80% scaling is ONLY when VRAM isn't a limitation.

Throw on afterburner and have it monitor VRAM usage. You're going to see 1250MB quite often, and when it uses that it wants more. I've seen people using that same texture pack on that same resolution using 1.9GB of VRAM. Your card(s) has to swap out that ~600MB of memory somewhat frequently, and loading textures is the slowest thing on a graphics card. Think of it this way, if you've got a 400 HP engine in your car but only a 5Gallon gas tank, tweaking the engine to deliver 600HP without changing the size of the gas tank doesn't really change much when you have to drive more than 20 minutes.

I get what you mean but i cannot afford to just drop down to a 460 with an extra gig of memory. My second card will be for future games also like battlefield 3. I oced my gpu and seen improvements of 15 odd fps. in the end i can hit as high as 30 fps and as low as 18 fps. So overall if i get another 470s what am i looking at roughtly? 40 50 fps?

I did what you said and put oblivion on for about 10 mins and my max memory usage was 375mb.

Not without turning down the settings. That's what we're trying to say. A VRAM limit is a VRAM limit. It's not something that can be maginalized by brute force. If you want high framerates, you either have to turn down settings to back off that VRAM barrier or get cards that have a higher barrier those are really the only choices you have. Your 470(s) will NEVER do well with texture packs at your resolution. Adding a second 470 will probably take your Max FPS somewhere between 40 and 45, but your low will probably still be close to 18(less than ~22), and your average won't move nearly as much as the max. A second 470 is a good investment for general gaming, but NOT for Oblivion with mods. You're going to see huge improvements in other games where you haven't added mods, but when you start modding, VRAM becomes your biggest opponent. OC your vram as much as possible, but that barrier is still going to be there.

I have turned down settings just not texture size. Qarls redmized pack is not that much of a difference anyway. Texture pack did nothing to my VRAM it was the shaders.

I tried a much lower res which increased my fps by 20 but it just looks uglier.

If you aren't maxing out vram currently, which you probably aren't... going SLI won't change that.

I was CPU limited around 90 fps in a lot of areas, that was my experience.

I ran Qarls texture pack maxed out with several other mods and the most vram I believe I used was around 1100, I never had any sort of vram issues with modded oblivion @ 1080p.

So its cpu? If i turn off HBAO and depth of field shader i go straight back to around 60fps. Its the shaders that are eating up my frames. I dont have any mods running. Only Qarls texture pack. My oblivion is vanilla and im not using hardly any Vram.

Then a second gtx 470 will improve your performance by quite a bit, vram won't old you back.

But i will be adding mods which will eventually eat my Vram. But im trying to get oblivion looking lush first. I wish this engine wasnt so shoddy with the memory issues.
