M-ATX vs ATM Motherboards

Thread Starter
Hi guys well in few months i will need to build a new computer or get a laptop

and im really looking forward to the new high-end bulldozers ..... and a 990fx motherboard

so to get to the point :
I really like the SABERTOOTH 990FX
but is it really going to be so much better then the M-ATX motherboards ???

yes I really appreciate the SLI/xfire but it isnt a must .....
cose in the time I will need a second gpu i will probably just end up getting a new one

so the important things for me is :
-the performance
-make sure I wont have any problems soon
-to be "future proof"
-lots of usbs
-overclocking ....

It comes down to whether or not you want expandability. If you want lots of expandability and a large case, then go with a regular ATX board.

If you are limited on space, and don't care about expandability, you can go mATX.

As for your list:
Performance = Same more or less. Most quality mATX boards can OC as well as their ATX brethren. The TA890GXE is an example. There are some Intel examples too such as the Maximus III GENE, Rampage III GENE, Gigabyte P55M-UD2, P55M-UD4, and others.

Problems = Same risks/chances of something going wrong with a mATX as there are with a regular ATX. It depends if you wanna cheap out and buy a meh board or a quality one.

Future proof = Same, depends on expandability and space. If you don't want expandability more than a sound card, NIC and GPU then you're fine. If you want SLI/Crossfire then you'll be limited to just 2 GPUs, sometimes hard drives are hard to fit in mATX cases, etc..

USBs = Depends on the board. Some mATX boards have lots of USB (mainly Intel ones). I have only 4 in the back of mine but I have the headers for more if my case allows.

Overclocking = Depends on the board. If you buy a quality board such as the TA890GXE, you can OC a 6 core up to 4.1ghz without issues. However there's some even ATX boards that blow a VRM when OCing a quad core.

All in all, it really comes down to space restraints and the desire of expandability.

I've been on both sides of the fence, mATX and ATX and both have advantages and disadvantages, but all of which come down to what I have been stating, space restraints and desire of expandability.

If you want to build a BA gaming PC that you want to take to LAN parties, I suggest mATX. If you don't care about LAN parties and the PC wont be moved a lot and you have the space to allow, go ATX.

I know I sound like a broken record, just trying to drive the point home.

If they release a mATX Crosshair, just like all of the mATX ROG boards, it will be a GENE board. I'm waiting on a Crosshair V GENE or a Gigabyte UD7 mATX.

It's pretty doubtful you'll see an mATX 990FX board....

As of right now there are none slated. It wouldn't surprise me though if they released some. The motherboard manufacturers are really starting to put some high end AMD boards in their line up for Bulldozer, so maybe after a few months a mATX monster will be released.

Biostar will more than likely release a 990 version of the TA890GXE, which will be a GREAT board if you don't care about SLI/Crossfire.
