12GB RAM (8GB usable) - Overclocking

Thread Starter
I'm a newbie to posting in a forum, so I hope I give all the needed information.

Last weekend I transferred all my "parts" from one case to a new one. When I checked "System"... I noticed under Installed Memory (RAM) 12.0 GB (8.00 GB usable). I found and tried a couple ideas on the internet to try and fix this issue. I reseated the memory (no change). I tried only 6 GB at a time (all memory worked, but only with 6 GB at a time). I removed CPU and inspected pins on motherboard. As far as I could tell, none were bent. I found a little thermal paste on the edge/bottom of the CPU, so I cleaned it and the motherboard pins and reinstalled everything. I now had 12 GB of usable RAM. I thought all was well…

I tried my first overclock yesterday and ran LinX (stable at 3.66 GHz). This morning when I was about to run Prime95, I went to "System" and again noticed under Installed Memory (RAM) 12.0 GB (8.00 GB usable). I went back into BIOS and switched back to Optimize Settings, but still only had 8 GB usable RAM.

I read in a forum about an issue like mine to go into msconfig and make sure under Boot tab and Advanced Options that Maximum Memory WAS NOT checked. WELL...mine was not checked, but I checked it to see what affect it would have on my issue. After a restart it changed to 12 GB (11.5 GB usable). I went back in and unchecked Maximum Memory and restarted and I now have 12 Gb of memory showing and able to be used.

I overclocked the computer back to 3.66GHz and experienced the loss of memory again. I did exactly like I did above and was back to 12GB of usable RAM. I turned the computer off. When I turned it on about 2 hours later, I was back to 12.0 GB (8.00 GB usable). It's like a vicious cycle...

I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but below are my overclocked settings. If you look down at Memory Standard and Advanced C Timing Control, you will see that there were no readings; just that they were in auto... like A and B. I am hoping someone will see this, find the problem, and help me out. Maybe even tweak my overclock settings in the process...

I am quite frustrated right now. Any ideas on what I could possible do to get this working right would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Are you using windows 7 or Windows XP, I know Windows 7 supports a heck of a lot more RAM then XP does, I don't know the number off by heart... maybe this is your problem?

the other thing also, is how much RAM does your motherboard actualy support?
and is this 12 gigs of ram all of the same make\model?

He has Win 7 64-bit, so that's support for 128 GB RAM IIRC.

You could check his mobo yourself, but since it's a UD5, I promise you it has support for more than 12 GB. (EDIT: Yup, 24 GB)

The RAM is all of the same model.

Whe using large amounts of ram or/and populating all ram slot its common to need to run your qpi/vtt higher than if you had say 6gb.

Id suggest upping your qpi/vtt up to 1.35v and try again.
If its solved then you could try to trim the qpi/vtt down a little until you find exactly what you need.

I have to up my qpi/vtt up to 1.41 if running at 4.4. with HT on and running my ram fast with tight timmings.

Intel reccomend 1.35v max but some RAM requires you to run as high as 1.65 to run at its advertised speed(like mine@2000mhz) and they say its safe but you wouldnt catch me running it that high.

Anyway,try to up qpi/vtt up to 1.35.

There is no such thing as Windows 7 Home Basic, only on Vista so that's can't be the problem. Maybe it's some BIOS settings but I'm no BIOS expert so can't tell you what to check in there...

the other thing also, is how much RAM does your motherboard actualy support?
and is this 12 gigs of ram all of the same make\model?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium and my motherboard can handle upto 24Gb. Yes, all RAM modules are the same.

I will try changing the qpi/vtt. I was just thinking that this problem started when I switched cases. The new case has several more fans. I thought that a 700 watt P/S would be sufficient, but now I'm not so sure. I have a total of (10) 120mm fans in the new case. I only turn them all up when I am stressing the CPU... like when I'm converting video. Could this be the problem?? You seem to know quite a bit about overclocking... any suggestions on changes to the settings I originally posted?? Thank you for your help.
Anyway,try to up qpi/vtt up to 1.35.
