In which case, you can get around 10tb worth of usuable disk space. Maybe a bit less.

remember to partition to 2tb partitions or less.

Everything I have read says that RAID10 is better than RAID5. You'll lose more space, but gain better redundancy and faster reads and writes. With a 6 x 2TB drives in a RAID10 you'll have 6TB of usable space with 4x Read and 2x Write; in a RAID5 you'll get 10TB of space with 3x Read and probably no or little gain in Write, since it's a software RAID.

Also, in a RAID5
Quote:
The array will have data loss in the event of a second drive failure and is vulnerable until the data that was on the failed drive is rebuilt onto a replacement drive.
Whereas with a RAID10
Quote:
The array can sustain multiple drive losses so long as no mirror loses all its drives.
Just something to think about. There is a HDD Forum here at OCN and I wager that the folks there know a whole lot more about RAIDs than I do. They might be able to point you to an affordable 8 slot RAID card, too. Hardware is always better than software.

Rofl, that's even more SICK. A part from that, here (europe) there are better SSD/price than the corsair force series,e.g. the vertex 2, i think.
