Linux for Notebook

Thread Starter
Ok, I was given an HP Pavilion dv1000. I'm on it right now. Thing is, I wanted to install LINUX on it instead of Win XP. But both Ubuntu and LINUX Mint failed to boot up correctly or at all. All I want out of the laptop is to surf the web and play back youtube videos.

Any suggestions?

The new Ubuntu and Mint both failed to start my monitor. I use Jolicloud, as it worked immediately, and its really nice and really fast.

Sounds like it is exactly what you are looking for.

often times, you have to tell the installer to load your graphics driver for it to work, otherwise, i think they use some generic driver. i think this is how to do it, but it was just with a quick google search, it looked like the best tutorial.

Actually, the problem almost always lies with the fact its through my KVM switch. If I pull it and plug my monitor straight in most OSs work. I understand just how far things need to go in order to get to the point of just the beginnings of working... but the new Mint just didn't even get to a command line or splash or anything, even when pulling the KVM. My monitor just wanted to be off/standby. Jolicloud gave me ZERO issues with my KVM, infact it supports it, recognized my monitor, configured nVidia for it, and started like a dream come true.

Ubuntu just kind of froze at it's boot screen. LINUX Mint would go to the desk top but it seemed as if different elements of the GUI were messed up. I booted Ubuntu from a LIVE CD and LINUX Mint from a USB thumb drive.

And that was about it.

You could try Fedora. See also my Linux Software Guide.

Thats odd. What kind of graphics does the laptop have? Sounds like maybe a graphics problem.

Trying a another distro couldn't hurt to narrow down the problem.
