Need an active display adapter

Thread Starter
Did a search and nothing really came up.

I started using a receiver which is hdmi and ended up not being able to use my 2nd monitor which both monitors are HDMI and was told using the display port would solve that issue.

So what adapter is recommended to buy?

I picked up one of

for my eyefinity and it worked just fine, but it's only DVI-D. I had already purchased two passive adapters which worked fine in 2 monitor mode, but I had to get an active for eyefinity. If you've got full-sized display port on your card, you can search Amazon for the same piece except with normal sized displayport to DVI then run one monitor off of the HDMI and one off of display port. It shouldn't be the same problem like it is when using 3 monitors.

It's odd that your receiver isn't using the feed from the second HDMI if you're only using 2 monitors. I don't know how it works with the 5850, but with the 6950s you can run two monitors on any of the connections (HDMI, DVI, DVI2, mDP, mDP) and only need an adapter for the third.

A quick search shows no active DP to HDMI adapters either, only DVI. Are you able to run through the receiver as a single monitor? The 5850 is HDMI 1.3 certified, so that shouldn't be a problem and it's the only thing I could think of in the way of it working, unless 5850s just can't run HDMI and DVI at the same time, which seems unlikely since it supports eyefinity.

If you need any info on the card's specs, I found this helpful.

Ah, and there is this, which shows all known/"certified" dongles to use with the displayport

I don't have a DVI cable for my 2nd monitor, i have it on a vga to dvi adapter...will this display port adapter still work with that?

I am using the Sapphire DP-to-DVI adapter and can confirm that it works with Eyefinity. Although Newegg does not show a pic, I suppose yours will be the same and so it should work.

Pics 1 and 2 show mine.

No.

I've done it before, it has to be straight to DVI.

24AWG is a higher quality rating than 28AWG and you can see this being reflected in their prices. 24AWG costs more than 28AWG for the same cable length.

For a cable length shorter than, say, 5 to 7 meters (or 15-20 feet), there is no difference between these 2 ratings. If you go over this length, it is better to use 24AWG to minimize the drop of signal quality.
(And as you can see, that site does not even carry 28AWG cable over 15 feet.)
