Hi Guys and Gals:

GREAT FORUM! Congrats!

OK, so I'm venturing into my first custom build, and I need advice before I ding the plastic.

I'm not a gamer, but I could be. I just spend a LOT of time on the PC, and want something smoking fast, that can multi-task a lot of programs, and that I can keep upgrading over the years. I have an Internet business, so a rock solid, fast PC is crucial for me.

Here's my current shopping list from NewEgg:

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM $19.99

Acer G235HAbd 23'' WideScreen LCD monitor-$40.00 Instant $179.99 $139.99

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound $11.98

TWO CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9B $20.00 Mail-in Rebate Card $269.98 $239.98 $119.99 each)

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard $209.99

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K $314.99

Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $30.00 Mail-in Rebate Card $279.99

Corsair Obsidian Series 800D CC800DW Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

-$70.00 Instant
-$30.00 Combo
$10.00 Mail-in Rebate Card
$10.00 Mail-in Rebate Card

$579.98
$479.98

I'm all ears!!

And THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

You really don't need the i7, the i5 2500k would do the job just as well.

If you're NOT watercooling do NOT get the corsair 800D. It's probably the worst aircooling case on the market.

the HX1000 isn't best for your money, I'd just stick with something like the AX750 or the 850. 1kw is overkill.

Looks like price is not much of an issue so everything looks fine to me and have lots of room for upgrades. A few comments though, I do not see any video card? I was about to comment on cooling and PSU but compuman beat me to it

Can you edit the op and condense the parts list?

I agree with compuman, and I want to ask about Video Card and no storage HDD? Are you transfering old hard drives?

Overclocking? Noise an issue?

Hi Guys:

Thanks for the responses.

I'm not watercooling .. yet. But I figured if I didn't overclock or get a hot video card yet I'd be OK with that case, and then I could do all that as stage 2 once I'm up and running. I really like the looks and reviews on that case, and figure it would be a great one to keep a long time and continue to build into.

I figure I can run the on-board video on the i7 while I load the credit card with more bullets then I can do watercooling and a hot video card a bit down the road.

I also considered the HAF X, for the awesome air cooling reviews, and I do like that case. I've always had good luck with Corsair though, and I do like Obsidian 800 aesthetically as well. Do you really think a case of that quality doesn't offer adequate ventilation/cooling for pre-OC/hot video cards operation?

And yeah, I had a 750W PS in the cart and then saw a Newegg combo, PS and case, and they got me to bite. $480 for both? Thoughts?

I have an external 2TB hard drive that I figured on for storage.

How do you like that motherboard?

Dude,

I have the 800D and it is just the worst aircooling case. My antec 902 was better.

It's a lovely looking case though.

For the love of god don't use the onboard GPU with an i7. You don't need an i7 the i5 will do just as good a job as the i7 for gaming.

if you are going to use the onboard gpu, then get an antec 380w earthwatts psu or something similar instead of the 1000w

From what I've read, the motherboard seems to do well (synthetic benches, some games :Tech report roundup). I'm too lazy to find more.

Lower the expense of the case and put something into a discrete GPU. The i7 IGP(terminology?) gets beat by a HD5450 i believe. It would even make a difference watching youtube. I'm going with a Fractal Define R3 for my build next year, but it matches the Priceerformance point I'm looking for. Nothing like putting a V8 in a civic .
