Which Linux?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to choose between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, etc. I'm starting to have second thoughts about gaming. It would be fun but with Linux, you need extra software (I need to find one that doesn't degrade game quality. Some software make the game all chunky with freezing, etc.) to play games. I'm probably going to do some 3D modeling if I can find software that's compatible with Linux (I think Google SketchUp is compatible. It's pretty good for a starting point in 3D modeling. I don't do any rendering so no software for that is needed). Otherwise, I'll be just using the internet, folding, watching movies, and listening to music. Thanks!

Read the stickies for helping you decide what distro. Normal responses to this topic will usually just contain whatever distro the poster prefers instead of evaluating what fits the situation.

Setting up games can be tricky and very hit-or-miss. For some games you spend more time getting it to work than actually playing it. Dual boot if you want to game.

First, read the stickies. Second, fill in your system specs.

Your best bet is almost certainly Ubuntu 10.10, it is very stable and well supported.
You will want to check out Blender 3D, it is a great 3D open source tool
Just install Ubuntu side by side your windows installation, that you can always revert. If you are even more hesitant, use Wubi to install, as it will install Ubuntu /like/ it was a program in Windows!

This^^.And linux has several programs to do 3D modeling(and anything else you'll need),you'd just have to check around and see what one fits the bill.

What's wrong with playing games on Linux? All the IMPORTANT ones work.

(Ignore the FPS, I'm temporarily running on a 5550! )

Dual boot Ubuntu. Or just put Ubuntu on a USB. Use Windows for games.

+ 1

I like Linux but I am a fan of using apps on the OS they were intended for without emulators, compatibility layers or work arounds.

As for which distro all the buntus are very similar, just comes down to which desktop environment. KDE and kubuntu are very user friendly and probably the least alien to a windows user.

Oh, I can understand that. But I can't stand Windows. I hate it so much that I'd rather have "problems" running a Windows program in Linux than the ongoing "problems" of running Windows at all.

(Like my spending half of this week trying to clean all the viruses off a friend's XP machine.)
