i5-2500k and Battlefield issue

Thread Starter
My game has been momentarily freezing while I'm playing Battlefield Bad Company 2. I think this has to do with the fact that my CPU usage is alarmingly high during game play. Even with all background processes closed, the CPU usage remains high (usually around 75% - 90%). Other i5-2500k owners report much lower CPU ratings.

My system consists of the AMD 6950 2GB GPU, i5-2500k Intel CPU, 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD, and 8GB G.Skill Sniper RAM. I have re-installed Bad Company 2 and updated all of my hardware drivers. Could the lag have to do with the fact that I had to manually update Battlefield? I don't mean to draw too much attention to this particular aspect of the issue, just a theory.

Here is a screen shot of my System Processes during game play... http://i.imgur.com/mp55W.png

Also, when I check to see if Punkbuster is installed properly, this is what happens...

Starting PunkBuster Service Tests (v0.988) (05/29/11 00:17:39)

Checking PnkBstrK driver status NOT FOUND
Manually stopping PnkBstrB STOPPED
Removing test PnkBstrB file OK

----------------------------------
Tests finished.

I also installed a program to limit Punkbuster's CPU usage but when I go to limit it, it says that the "Target is missing" but I'm able to limit other processes just fine.

Any help regarding this is greatly appreciated.

What's your CPU usage during a big battlefield match?
With my 2500K I get 60-100% cpu usage almost all the time during matches. Usually 70-95% all the time. So it's pretty cpu intensive!

Do you have speed step enabled? I've noticed that when i have speed step enabled my cpu usage jumps all over the place, even when idling, anywhere from 10 - 30% usage. When I turn speedstep off, it shows 0-1% usage at idle. That may not have anything to do with it, it's something I have recently noticed. I think i'll run some tests for myself and see.

Just popped on for a quick game and was only averaging about 35% cpu usage, and that was with speedstep enabled. So apparently the erratic usage i'm seeing at idle isn't crossing over to gaming.
