I'm building a new budget gaming system and would like to know how big of a difference I would see in gaming between these two.

Phenom has L3 cache and will most likely OC better.

Depends on what games you play, but I believe it will be around 3-5 FPS.

I'm surprised at how close those two are in both productivity and gaming benchmarks (besides left for dead). It will be a tough decision but if I think in the end I'll go with the Athlon, as the 3GHz version is going for $75 OEM on ebay. In my case I'm trying to go as cheap as possible for a quad core because I'm really tight with about $300 to upgrade this old case. The only reason I wouldn't buy the Phenom for the extra $30 is because I'm keeping it at my dad's for all the breaks I go over there so it won't even be my main gaming rig.

The funny thing is that it started with me wanting to go mega cheap with an older type motherboard, but then realized first of all how AMD has like 2 different sockets with motherboards that have multi socket support (damn Intel has a new one every year!) and how cheap AMD is even in the 6 core market, so I kept replanning. Ironically, now this $300 "backup/vacation" rig will smoke my main rig here (Core 2 Duo E8400, radeon 4890) having DDR3 RAM and a quad core. I was an Intel guy but with the Q9650 still being $350 and Intel creating new non-inter compatible sockets every time a new processor is released (1155 and 1156, are you KIDDING ME?), I'll stay with AMD for the future.

Remember if you plan to overclock the black edition PII's clock much better

Phenom. As others pointed out it has more Cache. Don't buy a processor based just on GHz. Comparing an Athlon to a Phenom is like comparing a Civic to an Accord. Phenom is AMDs flagship CPU (at the moment). That doesn't mean Athlons are bad processors. I have an Athlon II X2 in my PC and it churns along pretty well. I can play *some* modern games fine along with my Radeon HD 4830 and 4GB of RAM. If you CAN afford a Phenom, go with it. Go with a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. A key advantage this has over an Athlon, unlocked multiplier. This means much better overclocking.

Basically in more CPU demanding games the Phenom will spank the Athlon. In everything else they will be about the same, because they are actually basically the same apart from the L3 cache.
