Athlon II X4 3.0GHz vs Phenom II X4 3.0GHz - Page 2

Even in intensive games the difference will be pretty minimal. A year or so ago when there was a $50-60 difference it was a tough call, but now that the 955 is the price of the Athlon II x 640 a year ago, the Phenom II is the better option. Athlon II's are pretty mediocre overclockers as well.

Another option is an 1156(dead socket) i3 system, or 1155 i3(can't overclock) which gives you the option of grabbing a k series quad down the road.

An c3 revision (most new ones right now) athlon ii x4 can do 3.8ghz at ~1.45v. No point getting a phenom II x4 because it has much higher power consumption and heat and so little benefit. Based on tom's review, left for dead fps on the athlon is 100 compared to phenom's 125 fps, that's just unnecessary for 60hz monitors (most people here).

Phenom's can do probably 4,1GHz at the 1,45V...

And watch here...

The phenom every time pulls ahead of the athlons.

I've owned that Phenom before. I got it to 3.8 stable on air. A nice chip.
