New Propus CPU Fails to Deliver, Yet Again.

240 FSB = 3.85Ghz @ 1.57Vcore. Disappointing indeed.
At least it's better than my previous Propus, and I got it at an unbelievable price.

These chips are suppose to be the best bang for your buck. But when one considers maximum overclock speed, I seriously doubt this is true.

I am actually very curious to see how much vcore these chips can take (thinking in the 1.7 ballpark), and how much of an increase I will see.

What do you think?

3.85 ghz isn't a bad speed

You're already very high on the voltage. Don't go higher. Make sure you put the CPU-NB at around 2.8GHz and get the voltage up some notches.

Sorry to say, but for its current price, the 840 makes no sense (not that it ever did). It's a glorified Athlon II X4, and the Phenom II X4 925 is $5 cheaper and better.

Stock clocks on a Athlon II X4 is 3.0Ghz? 3.8Ghz isn't bad at all.
An even better choice is the Phenom II X4 955 BE,which goes for around $120.

I'm pretty sure I'll be safe with my setup to go 1.7vcore. BTW, I would just be doing it for poo & giggles.

Yea, I know. Thanks for rubbing it in my face.

I obviously would have bought the 925, but I got this as a combo deal w/my mobo for $200 ($50 discount). Would have cost me an extra $30 for a true Phenom, and TBH I don't really need one.

I guess I was hoping to get a golden chip (maybe one w/unlockable L3). I guess this is as golden as the Propus can get.

stock is 3.2, so the overclock is bad. 3.8 clock, in itself, is decent.

i wouldnt even dare to go above 1.5v

1.7v will kill your cpu in about a month

More like it will last 5 years instead of 10.

Obviously I wouldn't be folding 24/7 at that vcore. It's just my experiment.

You should donate one of your chips to me. It would be used to further the science of OCing.

Hate to burst your bubble, or maybe its good news, but those Athlon II's do not OC 800-1200mhz like some of the unlocked Phenom II's, never have.

I can OC my chip and drop stock volts down from 1.3 to 1.25v.

1.7V I would consider for a suicide run. It's not safe for daily use, even with water cooling. 1.57V is already quite high, and 3.8GHz is not bad.

But, that's part of building systems. You learn new things from experience. You would've probably be looking at 4-4.2GHz with the 925 at that voltage, but oh well.
