Why do people use more than 4gb of ram? - Page 9

I just went from 4gigs to 8gigs (temporarily) since i had it in another pc. Photoshop deffinatly load up faster... APB reloaded dosen't lag horribly. I have't tried my VM's yet but they should work a lot better.

Ram is so cheap you might as well get more than you need. I've been extremely happy that i got 8gb and not 4gb, it lets me reserve more ram for VMware and cut out the choppiness i was getting in premiere.

But i must admit i've always been one to stay a head of the curve in ram quantities after ram became nice and cheap.

I use 16GB for photoshop mostly. It's also nice to have a 4GB ramdisk to force temp files from certain programs onto and even run portable programs off of. When working with multiple 25 megapixel images and stitching them together the more ram the better.

Probably a noob question, but somewhat related to the topic...Why is that the larger kit you go with, the slower the ram gets? ie 2x4gb @ 2133mhz vs 4x4gb @ 1333mhz? (numbers not intended to be a factual statement)

This is horrible reasoning.

unless ram is outdated, it DOES NOT get more expensive. Why buy more than you need just because it [seemingly] doesn't cost a lot. If you need a lot, buy a lot. if you don't, don't. It'll always be cheaper to buy more than to buy it all at once unless you are using an outdated technology. this is why you see DDR and DDR2 ram costing so much and DDR3 being so cheap.

anyone with a simple grasp of product lifecycle should see this...

tech is new -> high price -> prices lower ->tech in its prime -> prices lower
->tech becoming outdated -> prices raise -> tech obsolete -> prices shoot up.
