Recently I have been looking more and more into getting a laptop as I head off to uni soon and I want to have that portability. I have been looking at a cheap laptop and just keeping my rig but just recently someone has offered me a 1 to 1 trade for my rig for his M17x R2 which would mean i would use the M17x as a desktop replacement. This is really tempting me as I love Alienware but I like the power of my rig as well. If you were in this position what would you do cos it seems like a hard one to call for me.

Do it and get experience from the trade. It won't hurt to try it.

The mobility 5870 is about the same as the 5770 desktop version. CF mobility 5870 is about the same as an underclocked desktop 5870. It's not bad, the CPU is not too ideal but the setup is good. I had a 920xm cf 5870m setup and it was pretty nice but I missed the sheer power of a desktop rig after about a month. You can't go wrong with either tbh, AW laptops are build solid, just remember that the laptop is just that, aside from the CPU, HDD, and RAM, the M17x-r2 is a 'dead' machine as in no more upgrade paths for the GPUs.

I'd vote rig because the GTX470 is already a monster and all you have to swap it out with something worth $300 and you've already exceeded the M17x-r2 in performance alone. With the M17x-r2 you're either stuck with it, sell it later for next to nothing, buy a new laptop for a premium, or rebuild a desktop.

sweet mother do that trade NOW. I have that exact same system and it's amazing, it's not even a downgrade from your sig rig, and the screen is... well, you can thank us later.

If you want to know anything about it just let me know, being an owner of almost the exact same system I can give you any info you'd like.
