Witcher 2 DX9 looks like DX11, the rocks, dude! - Page 4

Well yes, it looks very good to be DX9, that's true. But from there, to say that it is the new Crysis... There's a leap mate.

And as I said, it uses the 'focusing the attention' technique that most racing games use. It makes close things that are in motion, or shine have a nice texture and a nice polygonal model, and leaves the other stuff simply looking good. That's the secret.

If you look closely at the rocks (as it was used as an example in this thread), you'll see that it's the texture and the lighting map what makes them look 'detailed'. But the polygonal model itself is rather simple and edgy.

Sorry about the 't' thing. I always forget about it (more or less like calling the Brock in pokémon Brok... Dunno why really).

It sure has above average graphics, I did not intend my post to look as if it said that it looked utterly crappy; but it's nowhere close to Crysis as someone stated in this thread.

Crysis in DX9 with the DX10 effects forced (still under DX9 API) looks better than TW2. Possibly the rock textures aren't as high res as TW2s, but in return you get a much higher overall quality, not just the 'flashy stuff, swords, and NPCs'.

Don't get me wrong, I love Crysis , but like the above poster pointed out, vanilla Crysis has some nasty ass textures in it too, as most games do.

In regards to the "focusing your attention" bit - I don't quite get what you mean. It's true that objects far in the distance don't come into focus until you're relatively close to them, but that only applies when you're trying to scan the absolute extremity of an outdoor area. If you set Geralt in the town square of Flotsam, for example, then look around 360 degrees at everything visible, you won't see an un-drawn texture waiting for you to walk closer. Everything will look awesome, and will increase in awesomeness exponentially the closer you get to it. The only place where the game uses untextured filler is on the very edge of certain horizons [in-game miles away from from Geralt], where you can tell that a mountain or some far distant pine trees are simply drawn in.

And like I said before, the rocks are the muddiest textures in the game. Where TW2 really shines [texture-wise] is metal, leather, wood, and foliage. The armor in the game is amazing. It's the most realistic looking video-game metal I've ever seen - I think it even beats out the guns in Crysis [but that's a close call]. And just for the record, I've spent a lot of time positioning Geralt just right so the camera swings in super close on all the textures listed above, and they all look incredible when you're right up in 'em, too.

1. rocks are very rarely circular and round. Tessellation really enhances round, full surfaces. Unless the developer half asses dx9 to emphasize dx11 on the same engine. I'm looking at you unigine.

2. Rocks done in dx9 vs dx11 probably aren't going to be that much different because of the mostly sharp, edgy composition of rocks.

3. Game doesn't look that good imho. Ubersampling looks blurry and doesn't hold a candle to AMD's widetent filtering.

Your using a 470 OP, how would you be able to tell the difference without having a higher end card :/

What difference? I run it at ultra with uber off, tbh uber is not worth the hit on fps.

Going from a low end GPU to a high end GPU you'll tell a HUGE differents reguardless of what settings you use. I got a Radeon HD 5770 in the desktop I am on now and a GTX 570 in my gaming rig, let me tell you the differene is mind blowing on everything.

I just don't get it, man. I can run uber at an average 40 FPS, and that's a 50% hit for me from ultra, but I would take the performance hit for the graphical upgrade if it was more appreciable. Honestly, I think the game looks better without it. I almost feel like it does its job too well. Characters in particular look unnaturally smooth. Not at all "blurry," as some people have said, but less realistic - like the difference between stylized animation and realistic animation. Just my opinion - I'd be curious to hear why (specifically) you like the ubersampling look.

A 470 is a low end card now? I wonder what Ballathefeared is up to...

Come on, just because the lighting is good doesn't mean that the poly count has increased, or something.

So, lighting engine=Very impressive
Polygonal count, texture resolution=Average.

Edit: It makes use of an ancient technique. Make of ultra high resolution what you see the most (Gerald), and increasingly forget about what's in a second plane.

AKA make the rocks shiny with a nice texture so they forget about everything else.

Might sound as fanboyism, but Crysis is the only game to date that didn't do this. Crysis 2 overused it to death, though.

Looks good, but surely not impressive. At least to me.
