Cisco Catalyst 3650 Switch lockout

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I have a problem with a Cisco Catalyst Switch basically I have aquired this switch and when I try to access it via the console port it asks for a username and then a password, I have the enable password.

Could anyone tell me how to stop the switch from asking for a username and password.

BTW: I used the the password recovery procedure to change the enable password.

Thanks in advance,
Grant.

You mean the 3560?

If the switch is asking you for a username and password then either you have AAA enabled or you Console line has the login local enabled. What you need is to use your console cable and follow the password recovery process by bypassing the startup-config. You'll boot into ROMMON and change the configuration registers allowing you to boot into the switch and start fresh..

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_password_recovery09186a0080094184.shtml

How much was your 3560. I just haven't wanted to afford one yet.

If you already used password recovery you could do something to the effect of

Switch> enable
Switch# conf t
Switch# line con 0
Switch(config-line)# no password

Edit:
It may be something more like 'no login local' depending on implementation. You can use show run to see specifically what it has under "line con 0". Any statement within you can use no behind to remove.

Personally I would wipe the config and start from scratch.

Thanks for the replies I'll try them tomorrow and let you know how I got on.

beers, I might just reset it to factory defaults because I know it has 2 or 3 vlans setup which wont be needed anymore.

scottsee, sorry i've typoed. It's a long story but in short my step-dad has his own business and has recently moved into a new building, however the prior owners of the building went bankrupt and left a fair amount of electronics behind smile.gif

Thanks again for the help, i'll lets you know how I get on tomorrow smile.gif

If you want to just straight wipe the switch, hold down the mode button for 30 seconds and let it reboot.

That will wipe the switch to default, but you may need to still go in and do a couple "no vlan" commands.

As for making it to where login credentials are not needed, follow beers instructions. That will get ride of authentication for console. You can also do:

Conf t
no enable secret
no enable password

I would highly suggest having a username and password though.

I like how I tried to hit the tab button while typing the commands in here. It took a second for my brain to realize that I was not in a console session. smile.gif

Keep in mind if you also want to purge vlan data you will have to remove vlan.dat from the flash storage.

Definitely. It should be something towards the lines of:

delete flash:vlan.dat

Then just take a quick look the the config and make sure there isn't anything left.

Just do:

Show run

There shouldn't be anything left, but it's good to check.
