6950 advice

Thread Starter
So, I've been thinking about buying a 6950. What I've heard the performance is good for the price. Right now I have Sapphire 5770 Vapor-X, and I haven't had any problems with it.

Is it worth it? I have Athlon II x4 640 but I might also buy Phenom II X6. What do you think, should I buy the card (and maybe the CPU as well)? Or is there some other model you'd recommend? I'd like to overclock it quite much, maybe not to the max potential but still. And what brands would you recommend?

that card would be a good upgrade than your 5770
ur 640 is good, but make sure you overclock it enough

and its better you buy 2 gb version, unlocks to 6970

Yeah I will buy a 2GB version if I buy the card. For some reason my CPU becomes quite unstable when I overclock it, but I guess I can keep it at something around 3.3GHz.

Both, usually BSOD but then sometimes it just crashes randomly.

i just swapped from a GTX480 to a 6950, with another one on its way.

as a single card though, they are awesome. mines unlocked to 6970 shaders and i've maxed the OC in CCC, runs great. best bang for buck card i rekon. definitely get the 2GB version but be careful, a lot of the latest revision 2GBs cant be unlocked.

only 2GB reference models with the dual bios function can be unlocked. make sure you confirm that first before buying if you wanna be able to unlock.

might not be stable enough
lower the clocks and then try

well i am not sure if stock 640 can bottleneck 6950, but i think not

so you are good to go till the time you can buy a new processor

Yeah, of course I'll make sure it has dual bios

Sid, I just wonder why it is so unstable on such low clocks. But oh well, I suppose it is okay as long as it doesn't bottleneck the GPU.

What brands would you recommend? There is a special offer for Sapphire 6950 2GB (11188-00-40R), is it any good or should I buy something else?

well, any brand which has voltage control should be your priority

and as for its instability,i think a little more volts should do the trick
but i cant be sure, never had that chip, so you might want to post it in the AMD cpu section

Hmm, adding more volts doesn't help, the max I've gotten to has been like 3.1GHz. But anyway, only the reference models have the dual bios switch, right? I suppose Asus EAH6950/2DI2S/2GD5 Radeon HD6950 2 GB GDDR5 has the switch? It's one of the few I found that seem to be reference models (reference models look like the original and have that AMD logo on the PCI-E connector?). There aren't many places where you can buy them here in Finland and I wouldn't want to order them from another country.
