Does a hawk or lightning card necessarily overclock better?

Since those cards are cherry picked to be run at higher clock speeds, should they in theory be better at overclocking. I'm looking to buy a new gpu from the next generation of cards, i was just wondering if I should wait for msi to make a custom pcb card. I am also planning on slapping an accelero xtreme plus on the new gpu so the twin frozr cooler doesn't matter to me.

Personally i would wait just to see if their are any issues like the Gtx 570 Vram's exploding then if that is the card i would like wait on an MSI custom PCB version. Also i like the coolers that come on the non reference cards and its alot of money to spend so personally i would wait.

Short answer is no. They do overclock but a portion of that overclock is how they are shipped. My first lightning would not take a minimal o/c. I rma'ed it. My new one has performed beautifully with some aggressive o/c's.

Standard reference 6970 is at 880. The lightning is at 940, roughly a 80% overclock over reference. my first card would not stay stable at 970. My new one does 1010.

the main reason I went with the higher grade card was cooling and advanced PCB.

1010 over 880 would be 14% increase......

But as stated, it's still pretty much luck of the draw.

Lol. I was responding using my cell phone and doing the math in my head. Just another example of why I should always use a calculator.

Just don't buy a reference card from a company like MSI XFX Gigabyte etc, as they give all their superior chips the better cooling the reference cards are all low clockability.
