A single Dell UltraSharp U3011 or a 23 inch Eyefinity setup? - Page 2

I came from 3 24" monitors in softTH setup (a software DX9 hack that was around before surround/eyefinity). Sold those cheap ugly samsungs and got a single 30" monitor. It's incredible. Trust me once you get a 1400p or 1600p monitor you never got back. 24" seems so small now. Widescreen gaming isn't for everyone and imo it's mostly a gimmick.

I will say however that I do miss 3 monitors for productivity. I'm saving up to add two NEC 24s or 27s. But with a 30" monitor you can display 2 legal sized sheets of paper or in vertical a 13x19" photo! Much outweighs 3 smaller monitors.

DEFFINATLY go with the single good monitor. Although for work and productivity i like 2 Monitors, the third is TOTALY USELESS and normally i don't even use it. (exept for games) which have compatibility issues anyways.
Again, depends on what monitors you have and what you play.

Also, 3x monitors ain't useless. I have even used 4 monitors actively and needed all of em.

However, I'd still prefer a 30"

Another +1 for the single monitor solution. The fact is you eliminate all compatibility issues and this is from someone who has a U2711. You will be blown away at the quality. Later on you can get a couple of smaller panels for the periphial vision of eyefinity if you so choose, but the chances are high that you'll be very happy indeed with the U3011 alone.

No, eyefinity can't do mixed resolutions, so if 30", the only eyefinity option is to go 3x 30". No mixed resolutions allowed.

The compatability issues with eyefinity are blown out of proportion.

Not entirely true... As long as the three monitors support the same resolution you can mix monitor sizes. It will kind of defeat the purpose of having the 30" display though as you would most likely have to bring the resolution down on it to match the resolution of the two smaller screens, but it can be done.

Don't listen to any of these people, they just want to seperate you from your money as soon as possible.. turn off your computer and RUN...

Now that I've warned you. I have a couple points

1. For gaming it depends on what you are playing. Racing games/Flight Sims look amazing in eyefinity. Everything else I tried was pretty horrible. (of course this is subjective) so if those are your primary games, go for it, if not, it's not worth it.

2. The U3011 is an amazing monitor. I love it. I have a 3008WFP and U3011, and a DoubleSights DS-305 they all have the same panels as far as I can tell, and image quality is amazing. Pretty much same as 3008 except better feel with the controls. I would go with the 30" if I were you.

3. From my experience, I like the CCC easier than Nvidias when it comes to setting up eyefinity/surround. And to avoid problems if you go with Nvidia, make sure the monitors are the same model. Surround requires the same Resolution/refresh rate/sync polarity. ATI doesn't require the same sync polarity.

4. The single biggest problem I had with the 580s is that I can't run 3 in SLI and see the 2 side screens (I like to monitor temps, have other stuff up etc. when gaming on the middle one) with ATI in crossfirex this is no problem as all your monitors are on one video card.

Overall, I would recommend one monitor, I have found that's where I do 95% of my gaming anyway. and 2560*1600 is amazing.

Although it is quite subjective, I have been using a single 30" for the past five years. (Wow, didn't realize it's been so long.)

I have tried using a smaller 24" monitor, and I realized I couldn't live without my 30".

The one thing I do miss though is having another monitor on the side for extras. I like having a browser and Ventrilo/Teamspeak open on the extra monitor while gaming on the main one. Or having the Photoshop panels open on the extra monitor while working on images on the main monitor.

For gaming I really like using 2560x1600.

Okay I'm definitely leaning towards the u3011 then. My only problem with that, is it will completely take away 3D gaming, but then again for now, you can't really game with 3D unless it's 24 inch or smaller. Maybe I should just wait a couple more years for 3D gaming since it's very limited for now.

I like the idea with going with a u30 or u27 then adding the 20 inchers on the side down the road for peripherals.

Now I just have to make up my mind with CF 6970 or SLI GTX 580 3GB edition (in case I did want to try 3D and buy a 120hz 23 inch) on the side. I know the CF 6970 is much cheaper..

Well I have had a few monitors in my day including the Apple 30" Cinema Display which was awesome. I have also had multiple monitor setups which were cool but I was glad to lose them for a nicer single 24" 1200p panel long ago.

Now I have a 25" 1080p panel which I find good for gaming but could use more pixels for work. The main difference for me is the text size of the different resolutions. For reading, I much prefer the 1080p 25" panel I have now. I found the text quite small on the 30". YMMV though, it depends on your eyes.

I highly recommend the single screen over the multiple smaller panels.

I also recommend an AMD 6990 to run it.
