Looking for fanless/quiet graphics card

Thread Starter
I want to swap out my graphics card - this and the harddisk now being my loudest components - for a near, or absolute silent one. Performance-wise, i'd like to better my current model as best as possible for £30-40, but crucially it should thrive in (or survive!) the airflow of my system, to which i've recently added a Scythe, 800rpm, S-FLEX 120mm Fan; the case itself is pretty spacious, not a SFF unit, with a DVD/CD drive occupying a bay, and some loosely bundled threaded cables from the PSU tucked in the space above it; the CPU temp undulates between 30-35°C, w/ a cooler unit and fan.

Might anybody recommend this unit?

What might be good?

make sure you have great airflow if you are going fanless.

better performing than your 7900GS? (going off your signature here)
that 5450 isn't gonna do it.
GPUREVIEW - 7900GS v HD5450

the only things that the 5450 does that surpass the 7900GS are shader ops (7900 doesn't have shaders lol) and DX10 & 11 support. probably sound processing too, but I dunno.
edit- and I guess HD encoding and all that jazz

Tom's Hardware's "Best Graphics Cards for the money" monthly thing has an overall hierarchy at the end (May 2011 - Hierarchy chart) to use as reference.

For what it's worth, I'd just sink that money into something like an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 if you can find it anywhere. Be aware that, being completely passive means you need to keep an eye on airflow in the case. unless you strap a fan to it somehow

I don't much about cooling units, but i'm supposing that providing there's built-in instruction to my card's driver, the fan switches off when the GPU drops below a certain temperature? Currently, running a KDE desktop w/ an open browser the GPU temperature is 58C, and the fanspeed 20.0%, where the threshold is i'd have to investigate.

So these units are mounted on?

I do believe some fan control is at the driver level, as various tweaking applications can modify it on the fly. I'm not experienced with computer monitoring tools on Linux so I can't comment there.

the VGA cooler, however, I do know and most come with fairly comprehensive mounting instructions that usually go something like this:
  • remove the old heatsink's screws or clips
  • uplug its fan
  • remove heatsink
  • clean off excess thermal paste from card core and ram chips (if any)
  • attach provided ramsinks (if any)
  • bolt onto the VGA core.

you may need to apply thermal interface material, but a lot of VGA coolers lately seem to come pre-applied.

another thing to note is whether the card is a "reference" layout since that's what the cooling companies check. but I don't think I remember any non-reference 7900GS's (PCIe anyway) so you may be in luck.

Silent PC Review: Accelero S1 - they've got a quick install section that ought to give you an idea of what had to be done... with pictures

Could always look at aftermarket coolers, the Artic Accelero Extreme Plus/Twin have cooling that will make some watercoolers jelly and are barely audible.

^^I got those above readings with nvclock, and with this app fan speed can be adjusted, but it's a little risky for my liking, hence the graphics card swap/cooling unit.

Yeah, I know when I had the freezer unit applied to the CPU at my local computer shop the guy just cleaned the processor, and didn't need to apply any paste, but a cursory read of that spcr guide tells me this isn't the case here. And wowsers! What a whopper this thing is. By "reference" do you mean that the unit complies to a uniform design of the 7900gs?

And thankyou.

If I find a way to disable the fan in my g.card, could I still use this unit with it, being that the arctic unit is meant for passive g.cards?

I have the MD1GD3H NOT LP
its pretty good for what I do, HD movies, photo editing, 3D work and some games.
it peaks at around 35c at full load in my "fan loaded" case.

It's not exactly for power, its designed for HTPC use.
Passive and VERY low power 19watts

and they are cheap.
