Noob attempt at overclocking. Help please!

Thread Starter
Hey!

Finally finished assembling my budget pc, and now Im ready to do a little overclocking! But first, this is kinda embarrassing, but I have absolutely NO idea on how to overclock whatsoever, nothing at all! And Im just gonna learn from you guys so I can do some little overclocking tests to see if I can practise and stuff for more overclocking attempts in the near future.

Please do take a look and answer some of my questions, thank you!

1. Are my parts ok for a mild overclock while depending on my stock heatsink?
2. I heard that stock heatsinks can endure an overclock of up to 10%, can I overclock my q8300 from 2.5 to 2.7?
3. My current temps are 43c@idle and 50-55c@100% load, can I overclock with these current temps?
4. If all the questions above are pretty much ok, can you please give me some step by step instructions on how to overclock from 2.5 to 2.7?

I heard ram was a needed factor so Ill add some info about it that I got from Cpu-Z: (Dram Freq: 333.3Mhz, FSB: DRAM 1:1)

Thanks! Help a n00b out biggrin.gif

I'm sure the stock heatsink will endure a small overclock, but definitely don't overvolt unless you're sure that the temperatures are within control.

Overclocking is mainly done in the BIOS of your motherboard, but I suggest you do more reading for general overclock, and guides for your particular motherboard before doing anything overclock related. Not knowing whats what could hurt you know. Good luck!

get a better heatsink. I do not recommend overclocking on stock CPU cooling solutions. a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ is the cheapest and highest performing cooler for the dollar. it can be had for <$29.99 so get that first. if u need help installing heatsink report back smile.gif i have the cooler so i can tell u from experience.

i agree, dont OC on a stock Heat sink, 212 is a good choice or V6 GT will work too smile.gif

Yes! Becarfeul with the stock heatsink, if you still really want to do it 10% should be MAXIMUM but make sure you buy some Articsilver 5 thermal paste and apply that to the gpu and cpu before you overclock as the stock thermal paste used on the cpu and gpu is rubbish!

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your Q8300 is rated at 1333mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1333/4= 333, this is your fsb. (or cpu frequency)
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier of 7.5 (or cpu ratio)
so 333 x 7.5 = 2500mhz or 2.5GHz

unlink the ram, so it stays at its stock speed, this way it does not interfere with the cpu.

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 333. try rising it to 350
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download intel burn test (ibt) and run it.
have a look in task manager and notice how much free ram is listed.

in ibt set threads to 4 (for 4 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 5 passes.
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go over 70.C) iirc.

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 370 and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot. then just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency,
or
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.
you are fine upto 1.36v

the trick is to do this step by step, just take your time

also if going down this route, please get a proper cpu cooler.
there is a for sale section on this forum.
or a decent budget cooler is the Hyper 212+ and should get you a higher overclock.
also your motherboard is not that good for overclocking

also here are some bios settings, but these are on a different motherboard, so may not work on yours.

Oveclocking 3600Mhz default voltage in bios 1,2875V cpu-z show 1,250V
Load Line Calibration = Disabled
C1E support = Disabled
Intel Speed step = Disabled
FSB :480Mhz NB=1,41V ,Cpu PLL volt= 1,56V,FSB Termination Voltage = 1,26V
FSB strap to NB : 333Mhz
other options AUTO.
Cpu power consumption 3600Mhz 1,2875V = only 60[W]
Q6600 = more than 100watts
All 4-core temps are under 50C,Zalman CNPS9500 led,high 12V (2700rpm)

I can overclock my laptop from 2.5ghz to 2.93 with Asus Turbo Gear Extreme wink.gif. That is with garbage cooling *Belkin laptop cooler* and a simple frequency overclock. *literally add 15% to stock frequency LOL! Use a calculator and Bios if doesn't come with noob OC softwarez* On a Core 2 Duo P8700. So what you are looking to do is very easy and should be pretty simple.

2.5-2.7?no problem, you probably won't even increase your temps at all.Is that 800mhz. ram you have?

Its rated at 333mhz at cpu-z. Is it ok to put the ram timings and the vcore to auto?
