I7-960/Asus sabertooth x58. Stable 3.8ghz?

Thread Starter
Okay, long story short.... I would like to get to 3.8ghz stable. I have 12gb DDR3-1600(3x4gb), I7-960(D0 Stepping), and an Asus sabertooth x58.

Can you guys post some stable 3.8ghz OC templates for me to use as a reference. I would really appreciate it. I have seen a few templates already for i7-920's, but i would really feel better if i had an i7-960 stable template to reference.

Once I understand, and get some practical experience with OCing, i will attempt to go to 4ghz stable, and then eventually push to see how far i can take it.

Again I appreciate any information you can give me, and an accurate template to reference would be awesome.

Thankyou, Blood.

The Asus Sabertooth x58 is known for having memory issues. I also know the 12GB ram might be to much. might wanna take it down to 6-8gb of ram. If you have the chance i would RMA the the Sabertooth and pay the 30-40 for a better motherboard.

Thats just my 50 cents.

haha thanks for the smart ass response. If you read around and do some looking you would know that the ram has a very high possibility of affecting your OC results. As in what it will end at *how high of a OC* and also your timing and temp. *can find countless amount of post about this use the search*

It is also very clear that you have not looked around the forums bcs you have not post any REAL information that we would need to help you.

Next time you ask for help, first try to help yourself.

You should re-read the OP, he has 3x4gb sticks so your memory theory doesnt pertain to his problem, which is probably why you got the snide remark.

umm my "theory" is based on 12GB of ram. I said move it down to 6-8gb of ram *which does fit what he can do.* Don't try and correct me on my post when you also don't read my response. Regardless I will leave the thread alone and move on with my life.

Using a template as a build for your oc is not how to find a stable build. Period. If you want 24\7 stable you need to do it on your own. Each and every chip and mother board is different. From the quality of the caps and chokes on the board to the section of the flat that your cpu came from. Trying to guess and fill in the voltages isnt going to get you the results you want.

Using 12 gigs of ram is also going to complicate things. I agree that you should drop down the amount of ram your using and work your way up from stock speeds. This is the only way to truely get the results your after. Using 1 stick instead of all 3 will achieve this. You can add the other 2 later if it helps with your goals.

Most of the information you got pertaining to overclocking the 920 also crosses over to the 960. The only major differences is that the 960 has a higher multiplier and slightly higher voltages. Just be patient and it will pay off with a stable rig.

Look dude, the reason why 12gb can have an effect on the memory controller is because of the amount of dimms that are involved. In the OP's situation hes still have only 3 dimms.

Its impossible for someone with 3x4gb to move down to 6gb, maybe 4-8-12 but not 6 as there are 3x4gb sticks

You tell the OP hes got reading to do but it seems you have reading to do as well? I dont understand why this has to be so personal :/

I have had zero issues overclocking my i7 970 on my sabertooth X58. I am at a stable 4.2 GHz right now with 3x2GB DIMMs.

I usedthis site a lot. I am currently 168x25 with 1.29 vcore. RAM adjustments and QPI etc probably vary between the 960 and 970, so check the link I posted.

I have had ZERO RAM issues with overclocking on this board... I actually didn't even have to adjust RAM timings or frequencies for 4.0. However, 4.2 required some. I think or 3.8, you will have little RAM adjustments, and mainly set ur BCLCK and multi, with some QPI and vcore adjustments.

Good luck! I love my Sabertooth!! (minus the PCIe slot locations... 2 GPus get toasty, but that's a whole different topic)

i have the same setup and use 191x21 for a 4ghz stable clock, i would try that. w/ 1.31 vcore and 1.35 qpi
