Asked to stand in as photographer for a local club, please critique my photos.

Today one of my friends from a local lions club in my small town asked me to stand in as photographer for a 5K fundraiser walk that they perform every year.
This was a very small group, but in my town it is considered news worthy so my photo(s) will possibly be showing up in the local newspaper this week.
I feel like I'm critiquing my own work too hard so I figure some outside opinions would be good. I was shooting with a D40x (yea I know...I'm currently saving up for a D90) and most of my shots were taken with a Sigma 18-55 f2.8. The group shot was taken with a Nikkor 55-200 VR f4-5.6.

I would like critique based on whether this would be considered good photojournalism and the opinions stated here will probably help me to decide what (if any) photos I submit.

All of these shots were taken unstaged. I introduced myself and just told everyone to act normal. I was actively conversing with them about their club and its fundraisers in an attempt to keep them looking natural and not focusing on the camera as I was snapping shots. I apologize for the blurred out faces but I want to protect peoples privacy (especially the children)

These are about half of the pictures I had that I felt were decent enough to warrant further attention.
Are these sharp enough? most were taken while walking backwards pacing the group. The group shot was taken as requested by them, with the bleachers and stadium in the background, their positioning ment I had to squat down on a steep hill to compose the shot and get it how they wanted it, so a tripod was not a good choice to use. I included the dogs taking a rest because I thought that was a cool little break to the "action."

The lack of a level horizon in a few of the photos bothers me (1 and 2).

Also, you should compress them a little more for web use, no reason to be linking 1+ MB images.

I can go back to 1 and 2 and redo from the raw footage. I had cropped them a bit because I felt having the sky in addition to the stadium just made the group too small.

The last one with the dogs is awesome. Good depth of field, and I like that you got down on there level.

The last dog one is one of my favorites as well.
My understanding though is that the newspaper is primarily interested in the group photo frown.gif. I was going to submit the others in case they wanted to add a little more.

Unfortunately the group were very picky about how they wanted the photo done. I was trying to get them to walk out onto the middle of the field so I would not have to shoot from the hill. I was about 2 or 3 feet higher and shooting down.
The lions club president donated the money to build the field, so the stadium is named after his father, and they wanted the sign to be part of the photo. If I could have got them down onto the field and I could have shot from the edge of the field, I could have incorporated the sign better and had it better share the focus of the picture with them since using the telephoto lens from a distance would make it appear a little closer to them then it really was. They just wanted me to snap the shot and get it done with though frown.gif

Technically, all of those images need some color and contrast PP, but aesthetically -- none of those seem that interesting to me. The framing and horizon tilts just seem... rushed. I can't explain it.

Thank you for the critique. This is the first time I've shot for something like this, and I am definitely on an amateur level. I wish I could show you some of the photos this small town paper actually runs, some of my stuff will look like gold compared to it...even some of the stuff from their staff photographers.
I can go back and fiddle with the colors and add some contrast, but honestly if it seems rushed, most of it probably was. I do not like the looks of posed photos where everyone is just looking at the camera waiting, so I tried to do everything on the fly while walking and talking with them. I will try and go back and level off some of the tilt in some of the photos, but it also doesn't help that this is a pretty hilly area, so some of the shots where you can't see the horizon have that effect. some of the shots I was walking backwards just keeping pace with them. Upon reflection that probably was not the ideal choice for this type of event, I guess shooting like that would work if I was trying to photograph a convicted killer walking from a courthouse to a police car through a crowd, but I now have it in my head that this is just a small town event where I would have had all the time in the world to stage and set up shots, but I was hoping the candid on the fly method would work.

Are their any suggestions you have other then to take more time framing up my shots? I want to learn from criticism and adjust my methods.

Tomorrow there is a memorial day parade and I was invited to attend as the floats are staging and setting up an hour before the parade starts. I am planning on attending with my camera as this would be another good event where I won't look creepy just walking around taking pictures. I will adjust my method and see what results I come up with.
