6970 temps

Thread Starter
I usually monitor my temps very avidly, after having turned my 3 monitor setup into a 1 monitor setup to play brink (didn't support eyefinity, at least not at 3240x1980) I noticed that my idle temps for my 6970 at sitting at 61c which I remember being about 48c before I had a new case, I recently got a new case with more fans and much better airflow overall. I decided to do a little stress testing, and in Furmark my temps reach mid 80's with the fan on AUTO, Also at 3240x1980 furmark in full screen I scored a 600...

I tried running at 1920x1080 right after and it seized the computer for a bit, and Furmark went unresponsive.

Am I worrying about nothing?
Or should I RMA my card?

Also I have been noticing more and more stalls in gaming, where the program freezes completely, (borderlands and BBC2 specifically, but pretty much every intensive game seizes at least once an hour.) I have a problem about wanting to run at max settings even if I sacrifice heat, and frames... 25 frames is EASILY playable for me as long as the game looks amazing. I feel like I should be able to breeze through games with this card but it seems like I am hitting a wall here.

Mid 80s is pretty normal for a 6970 on auto fan profile, if that's the highest you got running furmark then I tend to doubt temps are your issue

Have you overclocked the card at all?

& please fill out your system info for your sig rig so that we might better be able to diagnose and suggest any other issues or things to test

Hmmm...depending on the age and rail layout on your current psu that might be an issue

Also on certain games it wouldn't surprise me if the cpu is struggling to keep up and that could be causing it.

Another thing that's always a good first thing to try is to wipe out all ati software and drivers and do a fresh install. Lots of times hardware gets blamed for something that is not its fault

BC2 is very heavy on the CPU, I don't know anything about pI's but it is a hold up I'm sure

a 6970 is a beast in BC2

I get ~60C @58% fan in BC2 with a slight OC on my 6950

Idles at ~32-38C most of the time, but its non-ref. and I have no side panels

maxed out and 1080p in furmark with 950/1520 @1.2V and 100% fan it levels at 83C

My psu is dated and cheap at that, like I said I have a 1000w BFG in the mail already, I have the fan on auto atm and the temp is sitting at 65c running eyefinity.

I almost bought Sandy bridge, but I despise Intel with a passion, and am hoping for good things for bulldozer, which is why I have yet to upgrade my processor which is also very dated.

Thank you all for the input.
