When Upgrading from an ATI card to an ATI ...

Thread Starter
I've been banging my head all day long for something that should be simple, but I can't find the right answer for it.

Right now I have an ATI Radeon 5450 (yeah, a really ****ty card) being run on Catalyst Control Center.

I bought an ATI Radeon 6850, but I'm not quite sure how to go about uninstalling/installing/upgrading/or whatever to my old drivers.

Should I uninstall Catalyst Control Center, then insert my new 6850, then reinstall CCC from the AMD website?

Or do I have to go to device managers, uninstall the drivers for my old graphics card, then insert my new graphics card, and install new drivers via device managers?

Or can I just not make any software changes, leave CCC as it is, and simply replace my old graphics card with my new one?

I'm sorry for all these questions, but I just need one solution, and i'd GLADLY appreciate any help!

Thanks!

It depends on which drivers you have installed now, as to whether you need to upgrade them or not. Personally, I'd recommend the 11.4 preview drivers above all others. If you have later drivers (since the 6850 was released), then you will be fine just swapping out the cards.

You will want to uninstall MSi Afterburner/ Sapphire Trixx or other overclocking software, & reinstall after you change out the card though.

My drivers were installed before the release of the Radeon 6850.
So I'm just going to upgrade to Catalyst 11.4, as you recommended, and then I'll swap the video cards.

And I haven't done any overclocking, so it looks like I'm ready to get things rolling!

And thanks for the help!!! Appreciate it a lot.

When I upgraded my 5870's to my 6950 I just took out the cards put the new ones in, then when I started my computer up it was in a very weird resolution. Just go here http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloa...n_win7-64.aspx and download the first driver setting. Restart your computer and there you go. Also I did delete the old drivers and uninstalled them before I did anything.

You can find them right here:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...lypreview.aspx

Just install them over the drivers you have now. No need to worry about uninstalling them. And this is great for when you're ready to start OC'ing it. Much easier to use for a 1st time overclocker.

Oh, and no problem. Glad to be of service

Could it be possible that when you had your 5870 and you simply swapped your video cards, your version of Catalyst Control Center at the time was too old to support the 6950?

In regards to the first part of your post, that was what was causing my headache! Earlier this day, I installed catalyst 11.5 over my old version, then I rebooted my computer. But I couldn't open CCC.exe, i couldn't find CCC.exe or MOM.exe in the processes... I was concerned about this because if I'm not even sure if the catalyst control center was running at all....

For the whole day I tried uninstalling CCC from the control panel and then reinstalling it, but I had the same problems (Can't open CCC, etc.)

So I installed 11.4 that you recommended, and i'm having the same problems of not being able to open the control center, not seeing it running in processes, etc.

To be honest, I don't really care if I can't open catalyst control center because I don't want to tweak the settings, but I just want to make sure it's running.... but it's not showing up in the task manager!

I just want to be able to play my video games when I install my Radeon 6850! How do I know if CCC is actually running, or if I actually installed CCC 11.4?

Well I am retarded. I just realized that i've been confusing Catalyst Control Center with Catalyst Software Suite (which includes the control center, display drivers, OPENCL drivers) this entire time.

So... Yes, I have installed the 11.4 drivers, and I do have the display drivers necessary for my new radeon 6850. It's just that I can't open catalyst control center, but catalyst control center is not necessary at all..

I'm going to be using ATI Tray tools to do my tweaking instead of CCC.

I think I got it figured out. Thanks again for helping, Lucky 13.

They renamed it "Vision Control Center" in the newest Catalyst versions. Look in your start menu and click that. Don't worry, I missed it the first time too. I have had a couple installations where the auto start entry didn't work for whatever reason in windows.

Mom.exe should still be running though, along with CCC.exe in your taskmanager. If your not seeing them, try rebooting. Further, if you still don't see them pop up. Uninstall via control panel, restart, then reinstall.

Never use driver sweeper or anything similar, as it tends to create more problems than it solves. Let me know if you need anything, by pm if i don't respond quickly.

I followed your steps, and it's still having the same problems =/

Can't find vision control center either....

I tried launching ccc.exe and MOM.exe in the taskmanager, but they appear for a second then immediately disappear.

But... CCC.exe and MOM.exe are not necessary to have my new video card working, right?
