ATH-M50 on notebook

Thread Starter
Hi all.
I recently bought an ATH-M50 with a Xonar DG.
They sound perfect together on my PC.
But I want to use my M50s on my notebook as well. The problem is that it sounds very crappy over my notebook soundcard.
What should I do to take full advantage of my headphones with my notebook?

I have an Eurocom Neptune with Realtek HD ALC892.

Thanks.

You'll have to buy a USB DAC.

Usb dac

I was doing some tests and I also get way better sound with my cellphone+M50 than with notebook+M50s. Not better than Xonar. And I have an old Sony Ericsson 910i.
But I get little difference with notebook+SwanM10 and XonarDG+SwanM10 when compared to headphones.

Will I get the same sound of my Xonar DG with an USB DAC and my headphones?
Which USB DAC do you recommend to take full advantage with my ATH-M50s, or to get the same quality of my Xonar DG?

Another question, will my notebook soundcard become useless with this USB DAC ?

1)To answer your first question, Asus is coming out with a netbook/notebook USB donge that utilizes the same cmedia 8786 DSP found in your DG. (Essentially a stripped down cmedia 8788 AKA Asus AV100/200 without the useless crap. Useless being my opinion )

I'm not really sure on the DAC quality of the U3, although I would think it would sound a lot better than your current onboard solution. It's also stated to have a small headphone amp and can be beneficial if your onboard isn't putting off enough power and or want to drive higher ohm headphones. Street price of the U3 is rumored to be around $30-40 USD which I think is quite fair for the DSP alone.

Of course there are other portable DAC's like the NuForce Udac or Fiio E series for example, but they range anywhere from 80-200 USD.

2) Your notebook sound card will remain intact and will only become useless if you disable the drivers.

The u-DACs are tbh, a pile of excrement. Both the original and the latter. I highly recommend not getting them. Anyway, once you set the output to your USB dac in Windows, it will use that. Choice of USB dac completely depends on your budget.

When I said useless I mean that when I use an USB DAC, my onboard audio won't be used right? The USB DAC has(or is) its own soundcard?
About the U3, I couldnt find it anywhere. Do you know how much is it costing?

Sorry, but I don't know much about these kind of stuff... I think that what I want is just an headphone amp(?). Because when I use my Swan M10 with my notebook onboard, the sound become a lot better than when I use my headphones, perhaps the headphone just need more impedance(that my onboard can't deliver) to work better.

So what headphone amp you recommend?
I'm between Fiio E7 and NuForce uDAC-2. Some reviews say booth are even better than some Xi-Fi soundcards especially because they have no noise from motherboard interference.

E7 is $99 and uDAC-2 $129.

It's annoying to have good kick a** sound on my PC and a crappy one with my new laptop.
