Help needed with Asus Rampage 3

Thread Starter
Hey

Hello people I just recently purchased the asus rampage 3 formula and installed all the components in the case.

Now when i boot up i have a problem with the motherboard not detecting my hard drives. I have tried many different options including changing it to AHCI mode (I am running windows 7). I still cannot for the life of me find out whats wrong.

The hard drives are detected fine in the BIOS but the motherboard refuses to boot from them. They are all in the correct boot sequence.

Here are some specs:
Asus Rampage 3 Formula
Intel i7 960 CPU
Corsair Twin3x 4gig (four one gig modules)
corsair hx 1000
galaxy gtx 260

Hard drives:
250 gig WD (os hd)
500 gig wd
80 gig back up drive with xp

If you would be so kind to point me in the right direction on how to rectify this problem i would be most thankful.

Ren

If you only have your 250GB WD OS plugged in does it see that?

When you installed your OS did you only have the 250GB WD plugged in? If not try reinstalling with only the 250GB WD plugged in.

Hey

I installed win 7 on my 250 when i was using my old motherboard which was a 790i ultra i thought that i could just plug the hard drive and it would detect it.

I will try only plugging in the 250 and see how that goes. Then plug the other drives in, if that dosent rectify the problem ill re install. Does it make a difference that my 80 has xp on it?

Thanks

Since you switched chipsets (e.g. 790i to X58), you're going to have to reinstall the OS. It won't just plug in and work.

So you are saying your 250GB drive had windows 7 on it to begin with? Or you 250Gb had another older os on it like xp?

If it had windows 7 on it will work fine. If it had a older os on it like xp. You will have to put it back in the old pc and boot into safe mode. Then remove all the chipset drivers, etc and then change it over.

But rather then going through all that, i would just format it and start over. Unless there is something on there you need to get off first. If so put it back on the old pc and get the stuff off you need. And then do a fresh format. Good luck.

he could have plugged it in if had run sysprep before switching boards too bad windows 7 doesn't have sysprep like xp. basically it sounds like he needs to unplug the 80gb drive and see if it boots then.

Hey guys i just want to start off by saying thank you for the responses.

The 250 drive has windows 7 on it and the operating system was installed on it using the 790 ultra board. I will try removing the 80 gig drive and see if it boots up. I was trying to avoid a reinstall of the os (cause ill loose the installed programs) but if it comes to that i will re install the os. I had no idea about sysprep not being supported win 7.

I also have another inquiry, the cpu seems to run a little hot (around 40 degrees celcius) and the graphics card seems to run quiet hot aswell. I understand that graphics are able to maintain resonably high temperatures aroung 80 degrees celcius but i dont know why this card is heating up so much just in the bios screen. The card is a gtx 260. The cooler im running on the i7 960 is a corsair h60 and the case is a 800d it has three 120 fans up the top aswell as the standard fans. The cooler fan is blowing air out the back as specified in the instructions. Can you suggest anything? All the connections are correct the graphics is in slot 1 and the cpu and cooler is mounted correctly using all 8 pins.

Thanks again guys!
Ren

a change of motherboards requires a reinstall of the OS.....in most cases. And any self respecting geek would do a full wipe reinstall anyways

Hey guys I just want to thank you very much for all your help! I have finally got it working! I tried removing the 80gig drive and booting up with it and it still did not detect the main drive.

After using that method I went for the re install and voila it worked! So it was to do with the hard drive containing the old chip set drivers after all.. Next time ill keep that in mind new motherboard new install as for the temperatures of the CPU it still seems to run at 40 degrees at idle.. I think its a little hot seeing as I am using the corsair h60 cooler.. The graphics card seems to be okay though.

Thanks again guys you really helped a bunch!
