Define R3 with more 5.25" bays?

Thread Starter
I'd really to get the Fractal Design Define R3 for a new build of mine...
but I'm a little concerned about it having only 2 5.25" bays.

I can cope with this, and if there's no alternative I will get it, however-

1) are there any very similar cases that would be recommended with more front 5.25" bays?

2) can it be modded in any way to make more 5.25" bays?

Thanks

True. It's just quite considerably bigger.

Case size (WxHxD): 232 x 560 x 561.3mm (XL) That's a pretty big case!

Just out of curiosity why would you need more than two 5.25 bays?

I have the Define R3 with a single Blu Ray/DVD drive in it and that's just for installing windows and burning the odd disk.

The Define R3 does have 8 hard drive bays though that have hot swappable trays.

Personally I think the Define R3 is one of the best cases out there. Unless you really need that many 5.25 devices I would try to find a work around or compromise. The Define R3 is definitely worth it.

That case is a microATX case and it costs almost three times as much as the Define R3. From the looks of it only 2 of those bays are accessible to the outside.

I would quite like to have 2x DVD-Drives for the purpose of copying disks. Also, I will be using one bay for a media card reader. Also, I'd quite like some front USB3.0 ports and I'd be able to put them in a 5.25" bay using internal USB3.0 ports on the mobo.

What do you mean hot swappable trays sorry?

Wrong section. This is for small form factor systems... the Fractal Design Define R3 is hardly small.

What about using a USB external drive for those times that you want to use dual drives, and then unplug it when you don't need it. That way you'll still have the second 5 1/4 for your ports / etc.

Exactly what I was thinking I'd do indeed Went for the R3 in the end and as you said if I need the extra drive I'll just get an external one.

Thanks for the reply
