Computer to reciever question (s/pdif)

Thread Starter
If I connect a sound card like an asus xonar to a receiver using an s/pdif cable, is the sound processed at the sound card or at the receiver? I'm upgrading to a xonar sound card and need to know if I need the one that is dolby 5.1 compliant if I'm just sending a digital out to a dolby capable receiver.

The audio is encoded at the soundcard into DolbyDigital. You'll need DolbyDigitalLive on the soundcard for 5.1 from windows/games, ect.
