[Toms] The 990FX Chipset Arrives: AMD And SLI Rise Again

The good news is that AMD still has a fantastic compatibility story. So, 990FX supports today’s Socket AM3 processors and the upcoming AM3+ CPUs based on the Bulldozer microarchitecture.

The bad news is that those Bulldozer-based chips are still not ready. Processors based on the B0 stepping are in the hands of motherboard manufacturers. But they’re all telling me that performance is nowhere near what they were expecting, and it’ll take another stepping to fix them.
So.. According to both Tom's and Anand, we have to wait. At least a little bit.

Why am I not surprised?

Wait, the better question is, was there ever a CPU that performed significantly better than the Engineering sample?
(I mean a whole lot better)

At least they're fixing the problem before releasing it to the public. (looking at you, Cougar Point). But yeah.. everyone berated me after I posted the rumor it was delayed, now it's all but confirmed.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one that gets berated by AMD fanboys.

Is it safe to say that THIS is the reason why we haven't seen any Bulldozer benchmarks?

There's nothing to boast about YET, and thus, there's nothing to "leak"

Hope they get this fixed quickly, and they can get the next stepping soon. But, how long does it take to do a new stepping, and then go into full production ready for release? Bulldozer should've been in full production already for the June 20th release.

As of right now, going with the 2600K for my 2nd rig may not be such a bad idea, I'm getting tired of waiting.

Sigh, I really want BD to deliver, or SB-E is going to be $999 & $599 for the high end 6 cores.

What a crap "review".. honestly, what were they reviewing? SLI scaling performance with current processors?

Well, they weren't given Bulldozer samples to test, so yea... Not much of a review with what they have to work with.

Is it Tom's fault, or dare I say it, AMD's?

Heck, they didn't even put it up against a 2500K, the review was more about the 990FX chipset and SLI performance.

Oh, AMDs faithful. If you believe strong enough, do you really think you'll have BD in hand by next week?

Face it. It's delayed. It's not the end of the world, but it's not likely you'll be buying retail Bulldozer before mid-late July. It's also unlikely you're going to see proper BD reviews any time soon.

It's a better situation than being handed Bulldozer only to be told one month later it's defective, and you have to return it (ala Cougar Point). It's also a better situation than debuting with much-less-than expected performance and no one buying it because of that fact.

Yeah.. It wasn't much of a review, but without the CPUs to match, there wasn't much they could go on. I mainly posted it to confirm the BD launch rumor as 'true.'

Edit: Here's Anand's comments, first from this review http://www.anandtech.com/show/4365/c...8-motherboards

"Just above Llano we will have the long awaited Bulldozer CPU. AMD originally wanted to launch Bulldozer at Computex but performance issues with its B0 and B1 stepping chips pushed back the launch. Now we're looking at a late July launch with B2 silicon, but performance today is a big unknown. Apparently the performance of B1 stepping silicon doesn't look too good."

And from Twitter: "Bulldozer's launch got pushed back by about a month, I'll see what I can do while I'm here though"

Still don't believe it, JE Nightmare?

That's contradictory. Anand states that they are currently on A1 Stepping. Tom's states that they are on B0. I would take both of these with a grain of salt.
