Worth upgrading? Or am I still good?

Thread Starter
I got the i7 920 back in its heyday and it was super fast at the time, even before overclocking it. But lately I've been thinking that the better games become in terms AI and whatnot, the more CPU power it draws. Metro 2033 for example heats up my CPU like no other, and there are bound to be heavier games in the future. So is it worth upgrading to a 6 core or something? Or can I still wait a few more years till another upgrade?

And I'm already planning my next gpu upgrade later this year, so don't worry about that.

looking at your signature rig, you should be fine for another year, maybe 2. graphics cards could probably use an update, but other then that, its a nice system.

Or 6850 crossfire, or 5850 crossfire. Since you can get 5850's here for £100 a piece, it would probably be cheaper. Not sure about there.

The problem is that the performance increase wouldn't be huge. Sure it'd be noticeable, but I'd suggest either going with GTX 560/470/6950/5870 SLI/crossfire, or waiting until at least the next generation of GPUs. The 4870x2 is still a very powerful GPU. It's not quite equal to 5850's in crossfire, but it's not as far behind as you'd think. Probably around 5830's, but definitely above 5770's.

Its fine for a good while and as you said, the GPU is being upgraded. Metro 2033 is a very demanding game, i doubt that many future games will be that demanding Take BF3 for example, when that is released i highly doubt it will be as demanding as metro 2033 and in my opinion it looks graphically better.

Yup! I reckon its just the fact that Metro 2033 is GPU hungry to the point it's clinically obese!!

Yea, I'm waiting till later this year to upgrade my gpu. Either I'll get the new 28 nm cards or if the prices are low enough get 2 6970's or something. If I were to upgrade my CPU, I wouldn't bother going for an SB or socket 2011 cause I don't want to change out the mobo. I'd wait for a price drop if any to get a 6 core.

You could probably milk a bit more out of your 920 (OC it a bit more) and make it last a bit longer than at least a year.
