If you can afford the 460 at the moment, just get it. At your resolution of 1440x900, you'll get excellent performance out of your CPU, despite its age and "low" clock speed. Trust me, I'm running my sig rig cpu at stock with my HD5750, and minus crysis warhead, I don't notice any performance issues at 1280x1024. Maybe Portal 2 made my system chug when there were scenes with the "goo" and water flowing all over the place (likely a physics issue, which shows the incapability of the CPU), but otherwise, it's all fine.

You could probably even get away with a HD5670 if you wanted to go the ATI route. A 460 (or 450) would be fine for you--whichever is not too far outside of your budget.

However, it might be well worth your while to save up a bit more and go for a new motherboard and CPU soon.

5750s are 7" long - won't fit (unless there are extra short non-reference designs I haven't seen). But I have a 6.5" GT 240 in my hand (this one)...

GTX 460 and GTS 450 cards use too much power and are too long to fit in the case. Same with the 5770 and up. Even a 5750 is pushing it.

It isn't worth spending much on this rig - even if you throw a couple of hundred at it you'll have a poor system at best.

Buy a GT 240 for $40 and save the rest of your cash til you can upgrade properly.

Read the last page at least before jumping in. 460 can't run on his PSU

you might be better off with a 1GB GTX 460

Anything higher and your cpu will be bottlenecked. It should run on medium'ish, however, bad company 2 is a quad core nazi !

My recommendation, however, will be to save whatever you can, and start building a new one from scratch if you ever want to play BF3

Uhh, usually you should actually have that motherboard if you have it in your sig/joined the club. If we all thought like that all our sigs would have an SR-2, two Xeons, and two 590s.

dammit, a 460 won't run on his PSU, and won't fit in his case. How would that make it better?

He has an Optiplex 745 Mini Tower. That means 305W PSU, max 6.5" long cards or they hit the HDDs.

Which means GT 240 (some models, not all), GT 430 or 5670. Maybe a 5750 if he wants to live on the edge with his PSU and if he can find a short non-reference card. Nothing else will fit.
