I think just under 100 bucks is a real sweet spot for headphones there are so many beautiful ones at that price. 50 there's really only a couple recommendable models. I've had my HD280s (not the greatest phones in the world) for 6 years now I think. The headband did break within first year because of manufacturer defect but they've lasted a long time now. When you consider headphones i don't think a 5 year lifespan for a 100 buck product is so bad (20 bucks a year).

For around $50 you could try the Superlux HD 681 or the Samson SR850.
