[Y!] Germany to scrap nuclear power by 2022

BERLIN (AFP) – Germany on Monday became the first major industrialised power to agree an end to nuclear power in the wake of the disaster in Japan, with a phase-out to be completed by 2022.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said the decision, hammered out by her centre-right coalition overnight, marked the start of a "fundamental" rethink of energy policy in the world's number four economy.

"We want the electricity of the future to be safer and at the same time reliable and affordable," Merkel told reporters as she accepted the findings of an expert commission on nuclear power she appointed in March in response to the crisis at Japan's Fukushima plant.

"That means we must have a new approach to the supply network, energy efficiency, renewable energy and also long-term monitoring of the process," said Merkel, whose popularity had suffered over her previous pro-nuclear stance.

The commission found that it would be viable within a decade for Germany to mothball all 17 of its nuclear reactors, eight of which are currently off the electricity grid.

Well then I guess they'll just continue burning coal or something... Real environmental healthy and safe. /opinion

I like the idea of giving up nuclear, it's not good at all... the problem lies in that there is no effective replacement.

Kinda strange?! Unless they have some ultimate wind turbine or solar panel the size of Belgium.

yeah by no means. I'm okay with giving up nuclear right away if we had something better to produce our energy with, but right now I consider it to be better option than other viable energy sources.

Sigh.

Greenpeace idiots are fail.

It's the eco nuts and anti-nuclear folks who caused this whole mess, by stopping new, much safer reactors from being built, forcing utility companies to prolong the life of the far less safe first gen reactors. They're also the ones who have delayed and finally halted construction of nuclear waste storage sites like Yucca Mountain, forcing nuclear plants to store their waste on site, much less securely and safely than it would be stored in an actual facility built for that purpose.

Way to go guys. Way to go.

Fission can tide us over until we get fusion nailed down. Quite frankly, nuclear is the most viable source for cheap, plentiful power. Just be smart about where they're built and we won't have another Fukashima.
This is all bs from Germany. They've been wanting to find an excuse to cut nuclear power for the past 10 years. However 10 years ago when they found that buying electricity from other countries was going to be come very expensive, they chose to keep some plants open. Why are they spending time on this now, i don't know. The ground work was laid 10 years ago and Fukushima is a scape goat.

wow, way to eliminate the source of energy that actually makes viable production sense. Good going guys, so I guess this eliminates Nuclear Fusion, GG germany you just destroyed your energy future.

Losing the power output of nuclear fission is a big loss. However, the Germans are resourceful enough to find a way.
For now I think that Nuclear energy is the best way to go until we get something like fusion or a LOT better solar panels or better wind turbines.

As for scraping nuclear power plants: Stupid move my friends, that what happened in Japan was because of a failure on the cooling system for the reactor which was caused by a big ass wave. It could of been avoided if they did what was recommended: Improving the barrier...
