As for scraping nuclear power plants: Stupid move my friends, that what happened in Japan was because of a failure on the cooling system for the reactor which was caused by a big ass wave. It could of been avoided if they did what was recommended: Improving the barrier...

That's another thing, the only reason anything at Fukushima happened was due to a 9.0 magnitude earthquake causing a 40 foot tall Tsunami. It wasn't the nuclear reactors fault.

The barrier would have to be extremely high. Towns still got wiped out with a 50 ft tall barrier iirc. The barrier launched the water higher in the air.

This is just another stupid way the Eco Nuts can just get us to waste more and more money. Nuclear power is probably one of the most safe and effective power generation systems we have today. The meltdowns in 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl were because of a first generation, "testing" phase of nuclear power. The incident in Japan was because some idiot decided it would be a good idea to build a plant on a island, next to the ocean, where they get big earth quakes. In other words... location,location,location...

Nuclear, in my opinion, is the best power generation we currently have. Until we have fusion, we should use conventional nuclear facilities.

they will probably make power from natural gas, given all the Sauerkraut they eat. tongue.gif

If the cooling system didn't fail the whole disaster wouldn't happen.

Quick fix, don't build the damn thing right next to the ocean... Just a incredibly retarded idea.

Would have been a lot worse if it hadn't been near the sea. They managed to just about keep it from becoming a major disaster by cooling the reactors with sea water.

It was the water pumps and coolers that broke down at the plant. Without the sea water, who knows, full meltdown?

A 33 foot tsunami traveling at 500mph and an 9-magnitude quake is what it took to take out those nuclear plants, and they only took them out because the backup generators were not shielded against a 500mph, 33 foot tsunami. If only the plants were able to be updated over the years, those backup generators would of most likely never gone out.... Modern plants would of taken the beating and not even break a sweat..

Solar/Wind are not there yet, and most likely wont be there for sometime. Nuclear is our only option, unless we want to continue to drill for oil.

Seriously Germany, way to be paranoid. Stop drinking the cool-aid frown.gif

Nuclear power plants need to be built near water. Japan is an island so they have no choice but to build it near the ocean.

The most embarrassing thing was Fukushima power plant was built by GE, an American design.

What happened at Fukushima would have been avoided had TEPCO followed the 2004 Japan NISA recommendations. Which were based off the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commision report in 1998 (Or was it 1999?). Nuclear regulatory recommendations should be mandatory, I say.
