First watercooling build

Thread Starter
Okay I'm getting ready to get everything for my first build in 5 years and as for as CPU cooling goes I want to liquid cool it. I'm getting the 2600K I7 so of course I want to overclock. Plans are 4.5 base since that's just the click of a button in Asus's BIOS and probably benchmark it at 5-5.2 or somewhere if I can get it and temps to play nice.

Back to the topic. Now this is probably a little obvious and as I type I feel less intelligent for having to ask but here goes. I was looking at getting the Antec Kuhler 920 system just so I can drop it in and it's good to go. But more and more I was looking at frozencpu (been in love with that site for years) and noticed they have this They have a 360 one too for $20 more but I'd rather not get loco with it since I'm not cooling my GPU's and I'll already have no room to be messing around losing the only extra bay slot I have. This is going in a HAF X so room is fine but if I go with either XSPC kit I'll be using every one of my 5.25" bays.

So will I see that much of a difference between the Antec and the 240 kit? I'll make sure to utilize outside air so I'm not sucking the heat from the case and trying to "cool" my processor with already warm water. I only bring this up since price isn't going to matter since total price are the same for fans vs tubing, antec and xspc respectively. This will be my first loop setup though so that's got me a little anxious but it shouldn't be a problem. Don't you normally seal it outside the case anyway and drop it in? Also what are some little cooling tricks I can use, like can the res be chilled with something?

Any suggestions are very much appreciated. My goal with this is to have a nice stable overclocked processor that can sit at 70C MAX at full load. 70C has always been an extreme number for me. I don't like it getting hotter than that at all, I'm just picky and have had a knack for temperature management. My old computer was air cooled, only had 1 case fan, a bay intake fan, a 80mm exhaust and a nice big heatsink. The way I had the fluid dynamics worked out with the intakes and exhaust (power supply was the main) I had my 2.93 P4 non HT overclocked to 3.5 and she ran full bore 64C.

Enough about details of miscellaneous things. Back you to y'all

That'll be enough for your CPU.

Oh! yes, you will see a difference in the temps compared to the Antec you're planning to get, in temps & niose!
Just get a different tubing, Primochill/Feser/MasterKleer cuz' the included on is a cheap kind!

Edit.
XSPC RASA cpu block, one of the best in price/performance ratio.

Well I would say if it was more reasonable to go with the 920 you could just go for that, but I find it somewhat crazy that this kit comes in at the same price range.

As far as cooling goes, from everything I've read the new sandy bridge series does not run exceptionally hot, but of course will get there when you throw enough overclocking at it. That being said, i've read in the air cooling section of people reaching that sort of overclock with these processors on air. The Kuhler is going to perform on par with some of the best air coolers on the market, and that kit is going to perform at least on par with the Kuhler. I'm currently waiting on my sandy bridge set up to arrive from some other members here XD. When it comes i'd be able to tell you a little bit more about the cooling efficiency of the actual water cooling system, and the sandy bridge overclocking.(360 rad instead of 240).

A few things I don't love about that kit, first being unbranded fans, they don't list what type of fans they are, but i'm sure some savvy guy from this forum could tell you those are yada-dada fans and they perform great/terrible. I feel that if you're going to go water cooling, just try to set up a system yourself instead of the pre-fabbed kit. There's almost always people selling off water cooling stuff on the forum and you could pick up a 240 radiator for somewhat cheap i'm sure.

As far as the bay reservoir goes, theres always different pump/reservoir options, I have a mcp355 with a laing ddc reservoir top, and it sits on the bottom of my case instead of taking up a drive bay.

All in all its really up to you, building it yourself always gives me that sense of enjoyment, but the kuhler would be more than easy to just plug in and enjoy. Either will be able to cool your 2600k, I can't guarantee temps, but its safe to say you'd enjoy sub 70C with either at 4.5ghz. On those extreme benching runs at 5.1ghz, you might actually get up there, but during any normal computing at 4.5 you won't even touch 70C.

Awesome thanks for replying so fast. I'm so anxious to order everything. I'll definitely be getting the 240 then. Now I saw that the RX240 has a thicker rad but costs more money. Temps should only be like marginally different right. 2-3C max? And as far as tubing goes yea I'm getting Primochill in white to match the "Stormtropped" look that I will be modding my entire build with.

Another quick question for whoever can tackle this, the Coolermaster 700rpm 200mm fans will most likely not be enough. Although they have 110 cfm and are low rpm so I imagine can hold some torque I just don't know if the static pressure will feed enough to the fans pulling on the other side of the rad, unless im paranoid

Yea I hear you. As far as res mounting I like it in the drive bay, nice and clean to me. The price difference is marginal since I would get different fans for the Antec and same goes for getting the XSPC kit. Only reason I'm getting a kit and changin 1 or two things is because of simplicity. $130 for a whole kit is not bad, considering the block alone is $60. This is by no means an attempt to be super cooler with it. I'm just trying to get the best bang for my buck. But I'll definitely keep shopping around. I have maybe 2 days at the most to make my decision.

The one interesting thing I saw that caught my eye for the Kuhler was that you could control the pump speed for noise level. I doubt I need that since why would I want to slow the pump down to begin with. Right now I'm looking at 200mm and 120mm fans for cooling.

Well I was kind of hoping to utilize the 200mm mounts on top of the case so I can get serial airflow into the case and some decent, probably Yate Loons since they're popular and cheap, for the pull effect. It'll be funny to notice the movement of air in my case. Heat will be getting pushed down and out, front to back & front to side. Curious to see how it turns out

No, that's not how it will work. The push fans of the rads will suck air from inside the case push it thru the rads to cool it then go out & the pull fans will cool the rads by pulling air also from the case then out while cooling also the rads.

Another question popped into my head. What do I do with the CPU Fan header since motherboards don't play nice without them connected in my experience. Just link up the PWM "Pull" fans on the rad to it and set it to full bore in the BIOS when it hits 50C? The 200mm intakes will be just off the power supply unless they get obnoxious then they go on the controller.

Also can I drop a temp probe into the resevoir or would that just be entirely stupid?
