How long will this setup run games well - Page 2

haha... your system will go a long way man

I got only one 6870 and I can max out any game now too... waiting for BF3 to come out and see how it goes I might have to add another 6870 in CF to max that game out ...

Most definitely five years, probably minimum even!
The way things are, PC games won't get very demanding as long as consoles are keeping the bar low. The only need for an upgrade will be when you feel you need more for other things (3D rendering perhaps?) and/or when you feel you want to for no reason at all except to get new stuff. My brother has a very similar build to your's (with just one 5850, though) and is very happy to not upgrade for another five years or so.

You won't need to. It's not even that graphically demanding compared to current games. Plus, if they end up actually going through with everything, DirectX 11 will be very rewarding performance wise.

All right, thanks for the input... Though I'm not entirely sure if I'm happy I won't feel the need to upgrade for quite a while or sad games won't be improving graphically all that much for a while. *Takes a gander at BF3 trailer and decides graphics are okay for right now*

I know there are plenty of threads for this already on the first few pages, but if any of you would like to recommend any games for me to get (knowing I haven't PC gamed at all in the last ~10 years) I'd appreciate that as well. Favorites are rpgs and shooters for the most part. (And contrary to what you might think from this thread, I'd be happy with suggestions for any good games, not just newer games with flashy graphics.)

Thanks again

That setup will last until some bastard thinks it's time for DX12 or some gimmick like that.
I think it's overkill since the graphics industry has been pretty calm for a while now, i'm expecting something noteworthy happening in a few years.

You want to spend more money?

Go quad GPU and dual CPU, then watercool the lot.

Just for the hell of it.

If you don't have a valve game, those are all pretty much awesome (half life, portal, counter strike, etc.). My favorite modern shooter is Bad Company 2, and I think it's pretty cheap at the moment. In terms of RPGs, you should check out The Witcher 1 and 2, I've never played them myself (not being a huge fan of western RPGs), but I've heard both are extremely good.

Not quite what I meant, should have said, "Not sure if I'm happy that games not increasing dramatically in graphics won't make me feel the need to upgrade my setup in order to be able to experience them in the way they were truly intended to be played."

I am, however, fine with not spending insane amounts of money ever couple of years.

Well you cant have it both ways, you either get one or the other with PCs.

Having the cash to spend on other things while owning a nice rig is the better deal though me thinks.
