help a brother out

Thread Starter
My boss (small business) wants me to put a new hard drive in the main or server computer at work, he wants the computer to run faster and thinks putting a better/ newer drive in will make it faster. my fear is that the computer is so old that anything i do will not help. so this is my question, where can i find a good beginners guide to build a home server?

If i get to build this id like it to be a mirrored raid setup so he no longer has to back up the computer. i cannot find any guides on building this type of server or if its even possible. i have built a few computers and am pretty comfortable doing it but i have no experience with server type computers.

thanks for any help.

Servers are usually just normal computers with more hard drives.

Dont upgrade when you can build new.
Thats my advice.

You can.

What do you mean, server how-to guide? Software or hardware?

Hardware = no difference except for how RAID is configured.

Software = Good luck.

What is the server running now? file share, DCHP, DNS, ftp, http, mysql, exchange?

If it is a simple file storage server go out and buy a dlink 4 bay NAS (network attached storage). Pop 4 x 2 gb western digital blacks in it and set it up with an easy online wizard. the enclosure does have build in raid which worked great when I had it all though it did have a slow network transfer.

If it is running many critical applications then I suggest consulting you local dell reseller for a price on a server tower. Towers are a lot cheaper than rack mounts and quieter.

First off I am not sure what kind of guide you expect to find. But I want to advise that a Raid or Mirror that you speak of still needs to be backed up. Never ever trust the raid to be fully redundant. There still needs to be a way to rebuild the raid should it fail.

Just my thoughts, but how did you land this job without basic knowledge of how servers work and what best business practice is for server operations and backups?

the problem with just 'helping out' is it rapidly becomes your fault when something breaks down the line.

Boss 1: "Hey the server's down. Nobody can do any work and we're losing thousands!"

Boss 2: "Well we never had any issues in the 15 years since we bought the thing until janz3n messed with it a few months ago - it must be his fault. He's fired".

If it's as old as it sounds, a faster hard drive will not help at all. I would go to dell, buy a new server with raid 5 or 10 and be done with it. Don't build a server, because #1 there is no warranty from a reputable company and #2 they will blame you for anything that goes wrong.
